Hi,

I'm trying to find a way to play KQVI with my mac os x - I admit I am new to this and really have no idea of how to begin. If anyone could point me in the right direction as to how to get started (or to call it a lost cause), it'd be greatly appreciated. I miss this game so much!

I'm not sure if you've tried this, but DOSBox is available for Mac OS X. I know that sounds weird, given that the Mac has never used DOS, but the program is still there for download. I don't know if it'll work, but you might as well give it a try.

Another option is to dual boot your system with both Mac OS X and Windows using Parallels. Granted, that's a more complex solution, but it's an option. Whatever copy of Windows you can get will probably work with DOSBox. I know XP and Vista definitely work, although I'm unsure about Win7. Collector would know more about that than I do.

There's also a program called VMware Fusion which is supposed to allow Mac users to run Windows on their machines. Judging by the name, I'm assuming it's a "virtual OS" and not a real installation. That might mean the system would move slower than if dual booting (and maybe DOSBox would have issues, but you'd need to find that out beforehand), but it's certainly an easier solution than installing Windows.

If none of those ideas work, I'd recommend checking out VOGONS. I'd specifically look at the Mac secton. You might be able to find help there.

DOSBox is a DOS emulator and is available on a variety of platforms including the Wii. It's not that far-fetched.

DPX has covered most of the bases, if you have the PC version. The Mac forum on VOGONS is just for emulating old Mac hardware, i.e. using Basilisk, etc. Be sure to ask any DOSBox questions in the DOSBox forum, not the Mac forum.

It is a different matter if you have the Mac version. If you have a PPC and a version of OSX that is old enough, you can play it via classic mode. If you have a newer Mac, this is not an option. You will have to use a PPC/Pre OSX emulator. This is where the VOGONS Mac forum could be of help.

I just got a Mac this spring -- and I am using VMware Fusion to run XP. I did have to actually install XP to get it on my computer, and I needed the actual CDs that came with my old computer to install Windows. I just installed the operating system, and none of the extra stuff that HP put on the old computer.

It works perfectly fine...it can occasionally make my computer slower when XP is starting up, but it's fine after that. I installed two King's Quest collections onto XP on that. They run fine -- I had to install the patch for KQ 7, though...because I kept on getting blown up by that fire cracker. (The collections that I have are the 1997 one and the one that came out for XP).

I have DosBoxWin installed to XP.

Alternatively, with XP running, I went to My Computer on XP and Finder on the Mac. I created a folder in Finder to hold the KQ games. Then I copied them from My Computer to Finder. I downloaded DOSBox for Mac. I couldn't get the games to play through DOSBox because it said that it was missing some files. It looked like everything matched the contents of the files from My Computer...but I don't know...DOSBox confuses me.

I found a program called Boxer and downloaded that. I then installed all the games to Boxer. They work, but I found out that after I selected a game, I had to type "reveal" and then the folder in Finder opens. Once that happens, I get into that and look for the Sierra.exe file. I right click that and then tell it to open in Boxer. It works. :)

The only game that I couldn't get to run on the Mac is KQ 7.

I'm also trying to find out whether or not there is a patch to get the games to run in DOSBox, in order to skip the right clicking in Boxer....also, I'd like to play KQ 7 on the Mac instead of having to open Windows.

That's what I did.

The Mac forum on VOGONS is for emulating old Macs, not for DOSBox on Macs. If you copy the game on the Mac, you can install ScummVM to play the Windows version of the game. I much prefer DOSBox for most of the Sierra games, but the Windows version of KQ6 makes it one of the few Sierra games that I use ScummVM instead. You can install Windows 3x in DOSBox to play early Windows games, but since MS never freewared 3x I can't distribute it with my installers.

I had someone that was working to develop Mac versions of some of my installers, but I haven't heard from him for a while.

Right...figured that -- I posted my question in the general DOSBox section. Hopefully that is the right place.

Oh...so that's why KQ 6 in one of the collections played in ScummVM instead of in DOSBox. I have ScummVM installed on my Mac as well. The screen size for that game was wrong for me. My screen is 13 inches instead of 15 or whatever it expected to play on, so part of the screen was cut off. How can I fix that? (This was in Windows -- didn't try it in Mac)

hmmm...it's good to know that you were getting someone to develop Mac versions of some of the installers. That would have made things a lot easier for me. If I can get someone to help me with the Mac paths for DOSBox, though, I'll be all set :)

The DOS version has low resolution dialog portraits and the Windows has the high res ones. The Windows version cannot be played directly in DOSBox and can be in ScummVM.
