Anyone have Vista or Win7 32-bit?
Anyone have Vista or Win7 32-bit?
I have been redoing the installers to add features and correct issues that others have reported. I no longer have a Vista machine. Would anyone be willing to test some of the installers for me? Here is the new KQ6 installer.
I would like it if anyone with 32-bit Win7 could try this as well. The other installers don't use a version check routine for any more than for shortcuts, which all of the installers use, so I will only need a few of the others checked.
I have combined the floppy installer with the CD installer. I am no longer offering the choice of the DOS or Windows version as the added size of installing both is just a few KB. It has a windows detection routine to install the proper version for the system that it is being installed on. The Windows version will not install on a 64-bit Windows machine and if the system is 32-bit, it will install the VDMS solution for KQ6Win. Since the Windows game can play without the VDMS solution, on Vista it installs with the appropriate compatibility modes and without VDMS. I would like it if anyone with 32-bit Win7 could try this as well. The other installers don't use a version check routine for any more than for shortcuts, which all of the installers use, so I will only need a few of the others checked.

I have a 32-bit Vista (still, yes... getting greyer every day too..) and am willing to test KQ6, but I only have the game as part of the Roberta Williams Anthology. Can I still test it?
There's a new script around: PHANTASMAGORIA - A Puzzle Of Flesh! Check the Script Party topic in the Bard's Forum!

Same here. I have KQ6 via a couple King's Quest collections I purchased. If that will work, I can test it on 32 bit Windows 7.
Re: Anyone have Vista or Win7 32-bit?
I am going to update the collections installers, too. I will use the same approach for them, too. Give me a little time and I will do both collections that you can use.

Collector, is there any possibility of an eventual workaround that might enable the Windows version of Kq6 to be installed in 64-bit Windows?
Re: Anyone have Vista or Win7 32-bit?
Natively? Yes, but don't expect it very soon. SCI support is being added to ScummVM. Currently the CVS it will load it, but it is not really playable, yet. Other ways to play the game have their drawbacks. I know of no other emulator that has as good of sound as DOSBox. Virtual PC's sound is crap and most other emulators are.. lacking. You can load Win3x in DOSBox to play the Win version, but the sound goes through the crappy Win3x drivers, losing the wonderful sound that DOSBox offers.
Many are excited by the prospect of SCI support in ScummVM, but there are only a few reasons to look forward to the implementation of the SCI engine in it. Those are handheld devices that don't have the guts to run DOSBox, the Windows only games and any games where the Windows version had some superior attribute over the DOS. The Shivers games are about the only SCI games that had no DOS version. KQ6 and possibly Phantasmagoria 2 are the only ones that have a clear reason to desire the Win version. The main reason to prefer the Win Phantasmagoria 2 is because of the interlacing forced on the DOS version and this could possibly be fixed with a script level patch like the one for GK1.
The vast majority of SCI games work marvelously in DOSBox and leave little to be desired.

GK1 had interlacing? I thought the script fixed that interlacing in GK2?
Or am I thinking of something else? (The lines and such...)

Oops, I meant GK2.

Well, when you're as old as Erasmus, you're bound to have a few memory slips.

It was my way of correcting him, after he previously corrected me on my memory lapse.

I have the installers for all of the KQ collections done, now, so if anyone that has Vista or Win7 32 could test them for me, especially the KQ6Win. Grab them on the installer page.

I have KQ6CD and Win 7 32-bit on my wife's netbook. But it has no cd drive (obviously) so I'll have to make a CD image, use Daemon Tools, and get back to you.

Re: Anyone have Vista or Win7 32-bit?
I just installed KQ6 Dos and Win versions on 32 bit Windows 7. Both installed and played just fine

That's great.
