Can't get GK2 English subtitles patch to work

Collector, hi,

You seem to be pretty much up on this stuff. I checked through this sub-forum, and can't find anyone having a similar problem. So here's what I did, and here's what happened:

1. I'm running XP Media Center Edition, and I already have DOSBox 0.74 installed in C:\DOSBox. I'm kinda a 'power user' since I help people get old games running on XP myself (I'm the author of Steve's XP Games Corner). The reason I'm giving you this info is so that you know where I'm coming from. So I hand-configured dosbox.conf.

2. Then I run DOSBox, and use D:\INSTALL.EXE to install GK2 to:

C:\DOSGAMES\SIERRA\GK2DOS

I choose the Large (L) install.

3. I exit DOSBox so it isn't hanging onto any of the game files.

4. Now I install the GK2 English Subtitles Patch via GK2Subtitles.exe. I point it to the folder above (I note that if you try to Browse to the folder from within the patch, it leaves a '\GK2' hanging off the end of the path which you have to manually remove. Not nice. I tried installing the patch once in that sub-folder, and it didn't work there either). During the patch install, it warns me that I need to have DOSBox installed in order to run GK2:

'DOSBox is required to play English subtitle patch for The Beast Within. You must have DOSBox installed in a folder named "DOSBox" in your "Program Files" folder.

Download and install DOSBox now? (Note: must be connected to the Internet.)'

Of course, I chose the 'No' option here, and the patch proceeded to install.

5. Then I start up DOSBox again and run the game. No subtitles. Even worse, when I try to examine something in my inventory, the game crashes with the following error:

Error loading resource 9944.v56
..\restype.cpp (72)

If I don't install the subtitles patch, the game works perfectly. Unfortunately, the 'documentation' provided by the author of the patch in the readme is woefully inadequate. Basically, this is it:

"Simply run Setup.exe, specify your the folder in which you have installed GK2 and say yes to overwriting files."

I'm a little worried, because when I run the patch, it didn't ask me about overwriting any files. Also, is this patch expecting DOSBox to be installed in C:\Program Files\DOSBox and nowhere else? It puts a Conf.exe file in the GK2DOS folder which purports to be able to change some DOSBox settings, but how could it do that if it doesn't know where I have DOSBox installed?

So, any ideas?

Best regards,
Steve

Try installing the game with the new installer, first. http://www.sierrahelp.com/Patches-Updat ... s.html#GK2 then apply the patch.
