Quest for Glory 3- Not working

For some reason, when I went to play QFG3 after I installed it from this website just like I did for 1 and 2, it won't start up. I'll click on the game and the window will pop up but a second later the window just shuts itself down. Am i doing something wrong?

Run the diagnostic tool from the game's folder in the start menu and attach the results here.

You are missing two critical files. These are the files with all of the game data. Also, i noticed that the installer is in the same folder. Did you install into the same folder that the install files were in? Post a list of the contents of the floppy disks.

Here is the list you requested. I just took the folder from my Quest for Glory Anthology Cd named QfG3E and put it in with the rest of the QfGs. I then saved the installer from this page in that same folder. Should I move it into the new folder once the game is installed? If I am missing files is there any way I can get them from you or can you tell me where on the CD I could find them? Oh and I put the file type in parenthesis for the ones that share the same name with another file. If you need anything else let me know (this is a bummer, QFG3 is my favorite of the series)

That is not from the original install disks. The installer only work with the original disks.

You don't have an installer for the QFG Anthology yet?

Yes, but it will only work for the Anthology CD, not a standalone copy of QfG3.

I'm not going to accuse anyone, but I am not going to build in support for "abandonwarez" copies of the games. Sometimes the installers will work with them, often they do not. Besides, it is just not that hard to find most of the Sierra games for a reasonable price, especially with GOG and Steam.

It's a great way to enforce legal acquisition :). Props.

It's not even just that. My main problem with them is the support nightmare. Abandonware usually comes from old warez releases from when the games were new. They are usually cracked, hacked, ripped or otherwise modified in someway, often with unpredictable results. Qbix can testify how often someone has reported a problem with a game on VOGONS and several of the regulars respond that the game works for them straight off with no special trouble. More often than not it turns out that problem only exists with an abandonware version. In fact, there are a couple of bugs that immediately identify a game as abandonware; the buyer never showing up in Gold Rush! and KQ4AGI crashing when swimming to Genesta's island.

That said, I have nothing against the concept of abandonware, but there is still the legal issue. Even the games of companies that no longer exist in most cases still belong to someone. And the most important thing to us all is when a game is still being sold new, it is not "abandonware". We need to encourage everyone that is seeking these games to buy them. The more that buy them, the more that the game producers are convinced that there is a market for them. This leads to more releases on the likes of GOG and if we are lucky, new adventure games like the revival of some of the LucasArts titles.

Just to play devil's advocate...

What if someone does have the stand alone version of QfG (or whatever) and doesn't have the anthology/collection stuff? Granted, it is cheap - but in today's economy - going out and paying 20 bucks that could be better spent going into a gas tank... Well, some folks won't be so happy to go and purchase a collection version.

Case and point, me. I have all of the single QFG games, but never got the collection. Mostly because I never found it. They released KQ, LSL and PQ collections constantly - they were easy to find in their various forums. But I think they only released the QFG collection once - and that was it - and for whatever reason, I missed that boat.

Not saying, "Develop an installer for me!" obviously... But just saying, there are those of us, whether it's because we lost our job, we have house payments, car payments, regular bills to pay, or a combo of any and all (like me!) - that purchasing 20+ year old games is currently out of the question for me.

Well, there are individual installers for each. Again, the main reasons that I am not supporting abandonware versions is more because of the technical aspect. As I have said before, when the installers fail it is usually because of user error or another version that is different enough to break the installer. I have been incorporating routines in the NSIS scripts to minimize the likelihood of user error and have been getting fewer of these kinds of support requests because of it. If an installer doesn't work because of an unaccounted for version, if it is an official version and I can get enough information, I add support for it. I am not going to burden myself with trying to add support for God knows how many abandonware/warez versions that might be out there for any given game.
