I followed the tut on this site found here
http://www.sierrahelp.com/Utilities/Emu ... lpha).html

I get all the way to the end where I "Run DOSDRV.BAT ;" but I don't know what to do after that? I'm a little confused as to what "Change directory to where the game is and run the game/application" does that mean I just run the game with the dosdrv window open in the background or do I do something with the command prompt?

Please Help!

Note that VDMS is no longer being developed and is no longer supported. On top of that, VDMS for Win9x was only in alpha stage of development when the project was abandoned. Use of VDMS on Win9x takes some knowledge of DOS commands. VDMS for 9x is not even necessary if you install DOS drivers for your sound card. I would strongly recommend that play your DOS games on a modern computer with DOSBox.

If you still want to try it, here is a page with some of the old DOS commands.

Well.. the thing is I want to play the Windows version of Kings Quest VI because of the differences between the two. I know they're not huge but they're important to me :p

I tried using DOSBox and installing windows 3.1 and it's ALMOST perfect but the audio hangs at times (If you interact with something "at the wrong time" it'll make whatever note that is being played will be infinitely extend unless another song is loaded in the background)

I tried using Virtual PC and Windows 98 but it simply doesn't work well at all, it's very glitchy.

I tried using VMDsound with my Windows XP partition and the cursor doesn't change when you select a different option to interact.

I tried using VMware and it's the closest to being 100% BUT I'm not a fan of the SBPCI card that VMware emulates and I figured I could use the VDMsound for windows 9x so I play the game with the soundblaster16 audio.

Thanks for the reply but could you please elaborate on how to run it? I use DOSBox pretty often so I have a okay understanding on how to use dos but I don't really know how to load VMDsound and Kings Quest together..

I've tried commands like

vxdload.exe "c:\windows\desktop\kingsquestvi\sciwv.exe"

Am I close? :p

If you are going to play KQ6Win in Windows 9x you don't need VDMS. In fact it would be completely useless for this purpose. Just use the original installer on the CD. If you want to try it on a modern machine, you can try a developmental build of ScummVM, which has added support for the Sierra SCI games.

Yes, I understand that I don't need VDMsound to run KQ6 on Windows98 and I can run it just fine without it.

The reason I want to run it is because I want to use VDMs Soundblaster16 emulation to output my audio and not the SBPCI card I'm using. Although my SBPCI card is working fine (and sound great, much better then a SB16 to be honest) I prefer the midi output on the SB16 it has a much more nostalgic sound to it since that's what I grew up using when I originally played KQ6.

I have no problem setting up this game and I've been able to run it many ways but I am looking to run it under very specific settings so it will be the same as when I used to play it.

I'm going to try it on ScummVM.. and I'm pretty excited to hear that it runs now. :)
Thanks for the heads up!

VDMSound doesn't work on non-WinNT OS's. It was created for WinNT, Win2k, and WinXP which don't have real DOS modes unlike Win9x/ME which run on top of DOS.

There was an alpha version of VDMS, but development of it didn't get very far. The only real use for it was for use on 9x systems that had the later WDM drivers, which included no DOS drivers for the sound card. It really is fairly useless these days. Anyone resurrecting an old 9x dinosaur for gaming won't be using such drivers as to require work arounds like this. Also, in this case, VDMS on 9x won't work with the Windows version of KQ6 as the game just uses the Windows audio.
