I know that many here are fans of peter Jackson's movies based on the Lord of the Rings trilogy. As you probably know, The Hobbit has been in the works. I stumbled onto this on the BBS RSS feed and thought that some of you might be interested in it.

Awesome! Can't wait. :D

It'll be so cool watching my little niece grow up and introduce her to "The Hobbit" when the time is right. 8-) Book first, though - then film. ;)

Cool, I love the Hobbit story. You may also want to give this one a try, not a classic but a nonetheless very charming 3rd person action/adventure game which sticks close to the story of the book. Played it many many times :).

Edit: demo

I have it for XBOX... I wasn't too thrilled with the game engine... But I may go back to it one day...

What everyone should do is celebrate by going on Lord of the Rings Online and go to... uh... Forgot the name of the server I am on... Oh! It's mentioned over here!
:D

wow, its early days but some of the cast has already been anounced. It looks like the rumors regarding Martin Freeman are true! To which I can only say: YAY and a double YAY for the schedule working out with regards to Sherlock.

I noticed (and other people also noticed) that the dwarf company wasn't complete - no one cast as Ori, Nori, Bifur, Bofur, or Balin. However, I'm not too fussed to be honest - of the whole dwarf company in "The Hobbit", the only dwarfs with real personality were Thorin (the serious one) and Bombur (the fat funny one). :p

Still, Balin probably should be in the film, because in the first LOTR film, his grave is discovered in the Mines of Moria by the Fellowship. So... ;)

Yay for Richard Armitage as Thorin! :D

I actually enjoyed The Hobbit more than the LOTR trilogy. It was more of a simple, balanced adventure and didn't feel as oppressively dark. I can see it making the transition into film better.

+1

I enjoyed The Hobbit much more as well, and honestly didn't understand everything that was going on in LOTR until the movies came out. They helped me enjoy the (audio) books much better. I have the Mind's Eye (audio) versions of LOTR and Hobbit...

I heard driving home the other night that there has been a big fuss about negotiations regarding the film. I don't know the latest since then though..

On the one hand, its great its staying in New Zealand on the other hand, it involves some shady things. Warner basically black mailed New Zealand into passing legislation screwing over actor unions. Cause that never led to bad things, a country bowing to pressure by a multinational company. I know that shit goes on every day but this is really blatant.

Well to play devil's advocate, I wonder what kind of powers the unions had (and gave up) over all of this. I wonder if the unions there previously had way too much power and this just brings them back into the fray? After all, the IDEA of unions, much like the IDEA of socialism, is a good one. In practice, however, I don't think either traditionally work as well as expected. To that end I will admit that unions do still have their place even today. But I don't think that all unions are beneficial. My brother-in-law works in the hollywood industry doing lighting design.... Some places are so bad that when he wants a box of cables moved from one area to another he has to seek out a union worker, ask them to move the box, and then proceed to wait until the union worker decides to go move the box. One extreme case I think he had to wait like 2 hours for something that he could have done in 2 minutes (it wasn't even a heavy box). But had he touched the box his contract on that job would have been terminated..
