KQ6-vista-getting it to run in 256 colors

I have windows vista32 and understand, from other forum posts, that KQVI will be optimal in 256 colors. However, when I tell DOSBox to run in 256 colors, it will freeze. If I change the compatibility to windows 95, or xp,or 98, and 640x480, it won't work. I have thought that running it in 320x220 could help, but I don't see that option.
So what am I doing wrong? How do I get this game to work?
many thanks,
-Alexander

Setting the game to run in 256 colors is only something to do for the Windows version. Don't ever set DOSBox to run in 256 colors. it will handle color depth on its own. If you have 32-bit Vista and the CD version of the game, you can run the Windows version of the game to get the high rez dialog images. For Vista 32, just run Setup.exe on the CD. The color depth will be set automatically. Alternatively, you can try ScummVM.

To collector:
HI! ok...I have a digital version of the game, which I bought from gog.com. I'm going to try scummvm right now....cross my fingers
the problem I've been have all game, is the graphics look wonky. The skeletons in the Minotaur cave are colored like a rainbow. It doens't look right.

SCumm is not going to work out, I'm afraid, because it doesn't register the saved games I already have. hmmm....
Also, I don't know if i"m running the windows or dos cersion of the game. It created a shortcut on my desktop, and that's what loads. It does use DOSBox, though.

The DOS save games will not work with the Windows version. If you don't want to start over, you will need to continue with the DOS version. I don't have the GOG version of the game, but would be very surprised if it was anything but the DOS version setup in DOSBox. One of the problems with the GOG releases is that they use an unoptimized older DOSBox,conf for their DOS games. Copy this in Notepad:
Code: Select all
[sdl]
output= overlay
fullresolution= 0x0
windowresolution= 800x600
autolock=false
[render]
aspect=true
scaler=normal3x
[cpu]
core= normal
cycles= 10000
[autoexec]
and copy the entire [autoexec] section from your existing dosbox.conf. Name it the same as the old one, probably something like dosboxKQ6.conf. Move or rename to original and replace it with the new one.

To collector,
editing the .config file, in the kings quest vi folder, with the additional code, totally fixed the problem. The skeletons in the catacombs are now white, and not purpley rainbow. And I no longer will see green inside people's mouths, as if they had eaten some kind of weird ooze.
::sigh of relief::
Thanks so much!

You're right collector. GOG only has the DOS version of KQ6.

If the Windows EXE is missing, you might be able to get the Windows version with ScummVM.

You need the high res character art files, though.

I'm pretty sure they're embedded in the same resource files. The DOS version just doesn't use it. Or there very well could be separate Windows-specific resource files I'm not sure. I'm also not sure if ScummVM requires the existence of the SIERRAW.EXE file or not to detect the Windows version. They still haven't updated a list of required files for SCI games yet (even though it's been promised before SCI implementation was officially added, which it now is).

They are the "ACTOR" files.
