A quick thought about QfG1...

It's just occurred to me. In QfG1, when your hero is buying apples from Amelia, the game says something like "You carefully select ten of the smallest apples in the barrel, and pay Hilde one silver piece." (I don't have QfG installed right now, so I can't run it and check).
So, my question is - why ten of the smallest apples? I'm aware that large apples are specifically grown for cooking and smaller ones for eating, but if you're paying a flat price of one silver piece per ten apples, then why take the smallest ones? Especially since you're going to give them to a giant. (And yes, I know that last point is in hindsight, so please don't that out).
Any thoughts? The most obvious explanation is "that's the way the Coles wanted it!" but that one's no fun. :p Use your imaginations - the more far-fetched the better!
