We All Love Sierra Games, Right? Well, what did you Hate?

... or even DISLIKE about some of the Sierra games?
This could be interface, or characters, or whatever - it just has to be related to a Sierra game. The idea was born from
discussing Codename: Iceman, as well my hatred for
the blasted Wizard in KQ3!

That's easy:
Thexder.
No, it's not an Adventure, but it was published by Sierra and the game is terrible.
It's virtually impossible to control the damn character! Half the time he just transforms into a jet, rams into a wall, changes back to a robot and then falls to his death.
Aside from that travesty, I don't think there are any Sierra (or Sierra family) games I absolutely hated. Some of them I didn't particularly care for, like
Conquests of the Longbow, but I didn't hate it.

I hated, hated, hated the wizard in KQ3. I've never finished that game because of him.

Hated cheap deaths and dead ends.
Hated copy protection schemes that make it annoying to play the games today.
Hated PQ's driving sequences.
Hated QFG's general bugginess. Would probably be my favorite Sierra series (barring GK) but almost every installment had some nasty bugs and this is the toughest series by far to play all the way through successfully.
Also in QFG, I hated doing the same thing over and over again to get a particular skill high enough to progress. I guess I just have a real love/hate relationship with the series.
Hated what they did with many of the final games in each series. PQ4 and SQ6 in particular took their respective series down some poorly conceived roads and I'd honestly have preferred that neither of them had been made.

- The gnome's name in KQ1 (especially the AGI version)
- The wizard in KQ3 (now i know the timing) and typing those spells
- annoyed by outdated US-oriented LSL age verification questions
- dead ends
- The sounds of old Coktel Vision games (Goblins, Inca,...)
- walkers in Impressions city builders with a zero IQ
- Codename: Iceman submarine
- Conquest of Camelot "combat" sequences (especially the last one)
- Gabriel Knight 1 drum code puzzle (as if anybody would know that without a walkthrough)
- Gold Rush: finding gold in the river and in the cave,as well as getting your own mule back
- Combat sequences in Mask of Eternity without being able to strafe or block
- Outpost: utter lack of a tutorial
- and lots more...
Still love ya, Sierra

Oh, I meant
any Sierra game, not just Adventure! So it's all good!
I own
Thexter, but only recently acquired it. But I have never played it (yet).

Interesting. What is it that you didn't like about CoL? Was it the interface? Story?

Well, as I mentioned in my first post, he was 1/2 of the inspiration of this thread! With everyone here - would you ever go back to it?
jujigatame wrote:Hated cheap deaths and dead ends.
Any game in particular?
jujigatame wrote:

Like which ones?

I think most would wholeheartedly agree, especially in the first one.

I remember the bugs in QFGIV... I don't remember much in terms of bugs for the others!

I disliked PQ4 was not Sonny Bonds... But didn't mind the game, if it was different from Police Quest, which is how I treated it.

Wholeheartedly agree. I hated that dude. HATED him.

I need to replay this, to remind myself of this...

...? I can't remember this one?

GoldRush was full of hard things... and instant deaths! Disease usually!

Is this that game that people insist on calling King's Quest VIII?
Rudy wrote:

Never played Outpost.

Well, and please Tawmis don't hate me, a game I really, really don't like is LSL6. I'd put even LSL7 in the category but that at least had nice, cartoony graphics. LSL6 has no plot at all and I almost couldn't bear finishing it. To me, the LSL series peaked with the third one, which was a masterpiece, and then went downhill from there.
Other moments that I hated were the boar-hunting segment in Conquests of Camelot, the moment in Space Quest IV when a floating Roger must escape the Time Police and the time-bugged Wraths in Quest for Glory IV.

I LOVE Thexder! Its sequel even moreso! I even bought the remake by Square on PSN. Though I have yet to beat either. I never got very far in this first one, but got to the last level in Fire Hawk. You've got to be familiar with Thexder's controls to succeed in it, though. Down always transforms into a plane from a robot. If you want to switch back to a robot you have to push the arrow in the opposite direction that you're facing or run into a wall/floor/ceiling. Z (SHIFT in Fire Hawk) charges your shield (crucial!) and Up jumps. Pretty straightforward. It's not a typical platform game, but once you get the groove it becomes quite addictive. Certain enemies recharge your energy when you destroy them as well. Certainly not impossible to control.
Games I hated...I can't really say. I was never partial to QFG, LSL, or Iceman, but I didn't HATE them. I hated SWAT. I cannot find any redeeming enjoyable gaming values in it at all.

I wouldn't smack someone for not liking LSL... (I recognize people are entitled to be misguided!)
I kid, of course. In all seriousness, I can see why some wouldn't like LSL6, when LSL2 was a jump forward from LSL1, then LSL3 was a jump forward (story wise and character wise) from LSL2, and LSL5 actually - sort of... well, kind of... had a story! Where as LSL6, pretty much jumped back to LSL1, with not much story to it (and you're pretty much stuck in one area, the entire time). LSL7 was pretty much if Disney did a softporn cartoon! (Which, I didn't mind!)

See, I always find it interesting when we're all here, we're all very different - and what someone dislikes, another likes it.
So what was it about QFG, LSL or Iceman you didn't care for? Was there any elements? Not into RPGs in general, so didn't like QFG? Don't care for adult humor, so didn't like LSL? Couldn't figure out the sub sequence so disliked Iceman?

Yeah, I know that NOW thanks to the power of the Internet!
But that raises an interesting question...
Would doing the above be considered cheating? Would you do it to rid yourself of the Wizard easily? What about looking at a Walk Thru? Is that cheating?

That pretty much nails it.
