Disney Princesses!

Princess Jasmine from Disney's Aladdin comes to "real" life via a graphic artist's rendering

We’ve always loved the Disney princesses in a fairy tale sense, so we’ve never imagined they were real. But one graphic design student at the Arts University College at Bournemouth in the UK had the creative idea to bring Disney characters to life using photo manipulation. Jirka Väätäinen told us, “I've always been interested in the way people look and what makes them unique in their appearances. This was a personal challenge for me to see if I could recreate characters that we all know and love, and try to maintain their unique features. The end results are what I would imagine the characters to look like in ‘real life,’ while still staying somewhat true to the unrealistic quirks in their original character designs.” Väätäinen said his interpretations of eight Disney princesses and one villain were created by combining elements from different photos of women who resemble the characters. He then creates composite images through digital painting and then puts them together using Photoshop. The results are stunning and completely entertaining.

Wow, incredible. But who's #4 supposed to be?

Meg from Hercules.

That Belle looks... grossed out or something, and a few ladies have awkward shoulders, but Yasmin is stunning!

I didn't remember there being a "princess" in Hercules. And what kind of Greek name is Meg?

Well I think it's female members... because Ursula (is that how you spell it?) isn't a Princess either, is she?

Ursula is the one villain he mentioned.

Well, consider Pocahantis wasn't a princess (maybe a Chief's daughter)... and Belle wasn't a princess... and neither was Mulan.

Well, the original script called for her to be named Magdalena Porphyrogenitus, which is an entirely appropriate Greek name ("Magdalena" comes from Mary Magdalene, and "Porphyrogenitus" translates from Greek as "born to the purple" or "royal-born". And yes, I had to look that up). ;)

But the marketing execs said "That would never fit in the credits, buster" and called her Meg for short. :p

I'm pretty sure that's how you spell 'Ursula'. It's also how Ursula LeGuin, the famous fantasy/sci-fi author, spells it. ;)

That is a rather lefthanded comment.

I'm sorry, but I don't get it. :?

I only know of Ursula LeGuin because I always notice her books when browsing in the libraries and bookshops. I haven't read any of her books yet, but they seem interesting. I don't know what that has to do with me being left-handed...? *confuzzled* ;)

A silly little joke. Her best known book is The Left Hand of Darkness.

Oh, ok. The only books I know of Ursula's are the Wizard of Earthsea series.

Aaaaaaaand... I seem to have gone off on a tangent again and derailed the thread. Sorry. So I'll get it back on track by saying... yikes, that picture of Meg from the Hercules movie is so stylized, it comes across as an ugly, mean caricature. :( I've never seen that movie - Is "Meg" supposed to be an 'evil' character?

On the other hand, the graphic artist's impression of Meg (and all the other Disney princesses and not-princesses, even Ursula) are charming. ;) I still don't recognise #2 or #5, though - any ideas?

Meg is half-evil really, she teams up with Hades to bring down (as in: kill) Hercules.
I can't stand Hercules, pretty much since I took mythology class and, when asked what myth Pegasus was from, the group replied en masse "Hercules", while the answer was Bellerophon.

#2 is Esmeralda (Hunchback f/t Notre Dame), #5 is Sleeping Beauty.

Wow some impressive photoshopping!

I'm pretty sure Meg's name is short for Megara which seems to be a town in Greece. Coincidence maybe?
