Shivers

Post by JonMcP »

Okay. At the risk of sounding like a newbie (which while I am here, I'm not to Sierra games) or weird (which maybe I am) I hereby declare, at the risk of immediate banishment, that Shivers is the finest Sierra game. EVER.

Don't get me wrong. I love all the Kings Quest, Space Quest, Police Quest, and LSL games. GK was great, too.

But Shivers is the one game to rule them all.

Love it, too. Just started upgrading the page on the Chest actually. Great puzzles, creepy atmosphere, nice graphics, great sound track,...

Here's a question for you Rudy. In the crazy colorful puzzle room that contains that frustrating marble puzzle, is there a voice saying "Don't touch me with that!!"? Or is it just me?

The atmosphere of the original Shivers has, in my opinion, never been rivaled.

I played and beat the original Shivers. I liked it. I don't think I ever beat Shivers II. Not even 100% sure if I have it... :?

From what I understand, he says "I don't belong here" and "Let me out of here!!".

I've played Shivers several times, and while I'm not sure whether I would dub it the best Sierra game ever, it is still pretty darn good. The soundtrack has to be one of its strongest suits, and I love the way the main theme reappears throughout the game, yet it varies so much that it never becomes repetitive -- in some rooms it took me a while before I realized that I was hearing the theme again.

Regarding the "Don't touch me with that!" line, various unsettling voices pop up at random while the music in the puzzle room is playing, and that line is one of them (along with the ones in the clip Rudy linked to).

Hey! It's the easter egg I was never able to get to activate!

Yeah I loved Shivers I. I'm a puzzle freak, spent two hours on Pinball puzzle but it's so great when you finally finish it! I was impressed at how the first Ixupi encounter (which scared me so much I fell off my seat) made me scared of continuing gameplay, whereas in 7th Guest the worst thing that can happen is a ghost that flies past. It's also a lot more international than the Trilobyte puzzlers without the scrambled words (which is a darn cheap puzzle, worse than mazes). It also has a decent story line, which 7G completely lacks and let's not mention the house that rapes women or that horrible Scotch thing in Clandestiny.
Remember I had to cut open the couch to salvage the disk when my father had accidentally dropped it between the arm and the seat?

But placing it over LSL or GK is a bit of an exercise in pointlessness. They're all such different games within the same adventure genre: one plays for humour, one for story, one for puzzle and scare. They all have strong and weak points.

Looks like you could beef up the easter egg section a little bit: you can also click the Deros head, Poseidon head, executioner's head after using the guillotine, the hung dummy, the first lamp in the passageway into the museum (after Stonehenge), and random buttons at the door to the Subterranean maze.

But I'm loving the screenshots! Seeing the Sand Ixupi being caught in the temple, he really looks cartoony. And compliments on catching the electricity fellow in the planetarium, he's so fast!

Yeah. Thing is Shivers runs fine on our ol' Vista. And I still have my trusty Dino, which I tend to prefer for the early Windows only games since it doesn't give any widescreen distortion or installation troubles.

It does consist of two parts. The Shivers installer can be used as a stand alone installer on 32-bit windows for CD-less play or in the XP Mode VM. The 2nd part is for Win7 x64.
