What about The Longest Journey?

Post by Tinuviel »

Do you guys have any advice/help for getting The Longest Journey to run on Windows 7? Try as I might, with compatibilities and other tips I've searched for online, my two-disc set just will not run on Win 7 64-bit.

Not sure if it will work with the 2 disc version, but it worked with my 4 disc set. Extract the DLLs from the demo into the base folder of the installed game.

Does that include the files to do the police station fix?

EDIT: Nevermind. Thanks for the dlls, but they didn't make any difference.

Oh well, this one might be a lost cause.

Give me some time to get home and I have another look at the game to see if I find anything else to suggest.

No rush. I'd pretty much written this one off, since its outside your Sierra expertise.

I may have a solution, but before you try it, could you post the "game.exe" here? It would help me in creating a better patch. For a future version I might try to include the official patch or possibly even a full installer.

For this initial version, do a complete install, apply the Police Station patch, then run my patch.

OK. Here's the game.exe file. I hope this is the one you want -- this is the game.exe that I have after applying the DLL files you gave me earlier. So if you didn't want those involved, I'll need to uninstall/reinstall to get you the original game.exe.

Oh, and where do I get the police station patch? Doing a search comes up with a ton of torrent sites, and I don't trust those.

And this site seems to have patches for the 2-CD version, but the police station is not listed in the notes: http://www.mofunzone.com/game_patch_dow ... 1_57.shtml

The DLLs would not overwrite the EXE, so that should be the same as the one from the disc. The patches are version specific, so I needed the MD5 of your version to to have it apply the right patch. The later patches are supposed to include the fixes from earlier patches. Download the patch above again. It now includes the official patch. Let me know if it works for you.

OK. After downloading your patch link, I'm getting this error.

"The procedure entry point ?GetString@LanguageMapper_t@@QAE?AVCString@@H@Z could not be located in the dynamic link library DX_MODULE.DLL."

I tried this with both the desktop shortcut the game created and the game.exe from the game directory; both came up with this error.

I should probably note that I did not apply the patch I linked from the one site; just your patch link.

Sounds like the DLL may need to be registered. Hold the Windows key down and press the R key. In the runbox type:

Code: Select all

REGSVR32 DX_Module.dll
and press enter. If it complains that it can't find the DLL, copy the above to a new Notepad file and save it in the game's folder with a ".bat" extension and run it. If registering does not fix it, without having a copy of the 2 disc version to experiment with, I'll just have to remove the official patch from my Win7 patch.

OK. File wasn't found in your first request (run-REGSVR32 DX_Module.dll)
Made the .bat file, put it in the directory -- response I get is "the module DX_Module.dll" was loaded but the entry point DLLRegisterServer was not found. Make sure the DX_Module.dll is a valid DLL or OCX file then try again."

By the way, the DX_Module.DLL file IS in the program directory, so the complaint that it is not there is incorrect.

I added the official 1.61 Patch's original Installer to my patch. It will start the patch and continue with my patch afterwards. If 1.61 fails to install, you can try one of the earlier versions of the official patch.

Same error. I did not uninstall/reinstall the game, would that make a difference?

Error is: "The procedure entry point ?GetString@LanguageMapper_t@@QAE?AVCString@@H@Z could not be located in the dynamic link library DX_MODULE.DLL.

Would you like me to attach the dx module file? Or is that not possible on the forums?

I already have it from the patch. Don't try to register the DLL. Did you try to start the game, anyway?

OK, let's start over.

Fresh install. Then installed your above-linked patch. This is the error I get:

"The procedure entry point ?Error@Log_t@@SAXHHPBDH@Z could not be located in the dynamic link library DX_MODULE.DLL."
