QfG5

Just to say that today I ordered my copy of QfG5 from eBay... I never played the game and I can't really wait!
There's something about the setting - if I'm not mistaken Silmaria is similar to Greece/Ancient Rome - that I already madly love. To prepare myself, I'm thinking of restarting QfG4...
... but if I see another time the dreadful Error 58 I might break my laptop out of frustration!

You're exactly right on the Greek mythology theme. That's a game I wouldn't mind trying over again someday.

It's a good game in its own right, but don't forget that it strays from the other games in a few ways. The main difference is that it's a little more combat-heavy than the other games (although the Thief and Wizard can avoid most combat situations pretty easily, with the Thief being rewarded for taking the stealthy route; even Paladins have an ability similar to the Calm spell that allows them to easily avoid combat).

Andrea, your copy of QfG4 was the Anthology, was it not?

Yes, Collector...
And I can say now, since yesterday evening I tried, that - patch or non patch - Error 47 was still there...

This is the important thing to me, that I can avoid the combats!
And of course: the story and the characters. I already know that I'll see some old characters from QfG1 and I can't wait!

You're going to meet some old friends from all four games here, Andrea, as well as many new characters. *smile* QfG5 does get a few things wrong in my not-so-humble-opinion, but most of the time it's right on target.
The setting is indeed similar to Greek mythology, with also other references to real-life stuff.
I remember well the excitement of getting my copy of QfG5 the day after it came out here in Australia, nearly ten years ago. Hmmm - hey, that's right. The QfG5 release date was 10th of December, 1998 - that means the game itself is nearly 10 years old. *starts darning a banner that says "Happy 10th Birthday, Quest for Glory 5"*
What, mad? No, not I... *innocently polishes his halo*

We indeed must celebrate! I just to hope to have played and finished the game by that date!

Andrea, I am awfully sorry that your game of QfG4 is still giving you errors. If I see a copy of the stand-alone QfG anywhere, I'd be happy to grab it and send it to you. I wish I HAD purchased that copy at the game shop in my local shopping centre... It was sitting there, innocently... I nearly did buy it even though I already have it.
You will certainly love QfG5. It has a beautiful setting, and there are some fantastic moments in the game.
You will definitely need the patch for it to avoid having two air balloons and to avoid suddenly popping out of the game while running through the island of Marete. The patch fixes those problems completely.

Does the patch also fix the dragon fight? *wonders* Last time I played QfG5 (in Windows 2000), my game crashed-to-desktop right in the middle of the dragon fight.
Very annoying, that was...
***EDIT***
Oh no! My post count is now the number of the very famous error 52! *runs away, screaming*

Thanks Almirena! I was thinking of getting QfG4 standalone too, so to play it properly. When I first bought the collection it seemed like the right idea, but it was so dreadfully done that I regretted it from the very first time I played it.
I already have printed Collector's page about QfG5... And I'm all ready to receive the game: it should arrive today or, if not, Monday...

Whatever other issues it may have, Dragon Fire certainly has an absolutely enchanting setting. The music, the scenery, the ambiance... *blissful sigh* It was wonderful to revisit some of my favourite characters.
What I really like, is that you can get the soothing ambient music files off the game disc and combine them with the complimentary tracks from the soundtrack to make a completely relaxing and wonderful playlist.

I remember some early CD games having something called "Redbook Audio." With that, you could pop the CD game disc into a normal CD player and listen to the music from the game. Two titles that stand out in my mind are the original Rainbow Six and Warhawk (which was for the PS1).
I think they stopped doing that so they could sell separate audio soundtrack discs. Whatever the case, some games may still use it, but not that many. Since games have nearly all gone to DVD now, it's highly unlikely any of them still do it.

The Quest for Glory Collection Series included a hybrid disc with a demo of QfG5 on the data track and the Dragon Fire soundtrack on the audio track. Shivers 2 also included an audio track of music on the 2nd game disc. Neither of these used the audio tracks for any game play.
The very first hybrid discs were used to provide CD quality audio for the games. The entire audio track for Loom VGA was a Redbook audio track on the CD. Sierra was one of the pioneers of game audio and had used a Redbook audio track for some of their early digital audio games, such as Jones in the Fast Lane. These games are problematic on modern computers. The best way to run these games is to make a BIN/CUE of the disc to mount in DOSBox, or in the case with Loom, rip the audio track to and MP3 or OGG and play it with ScummVM.

I never fisnished it for reasons I can't remember. I don't remember an ending on that game, so unless I forgot - I am fairly certain I never finished it...
