Leisure Suit Larry: Yank Hers Away-- A TP-like Remake Prop.

Back in the old Larry Laffer.net forums, I proposed what would LSL7: Love For Sail would be like if was more like Torin's Passage. That is, with tighter writing, more mid-90s computer rendered visuals, a similar array of whacky characters, a little more involving story, and the more suggestive humor of TP. In case you've lost me, I've thought of (and I think I can be able to do it) a remake of LSL7 which attempted to fit in with the plots of the previous games, but it's design and look would have more in common with Torin's Passage. It would be more enhanced than TP. I won't go into a too lengthy discussion on how more TP the remake concept would be like, but I did do a fan art piece which pays homage to both TP and the covers of other LSL games. I'm pretty proud of this one.

In case you were wondering, the "Yank Hers Away" subtitle was one of the many rejected titles for Love for Sail. The lettering on my fan art piece is modeled off of Love for Sail, and the feeding tentacle rising from the surface is an ode to a lovable thriller by Peter Benchley about a killer giant squid, Beast. The cruise vessel design was traced from an actual vessel with a minor addition.

Nicely done! (And I am pretty sure I remember that on the LarryLaffer.net forums, before I just had it directing here to SHP!)

Thanks, Tawmis! I made a mistake in my first post. The lettering is based off of Torin's Passage's. I don't know why I said Love for Sail's font. I hope to do more concept sketches for the Yank Hers Away concept. :)

Nice drawing :-D. Haven't played LSL, but I loved TP.

I thought everyone in the known universe had played LSL, usually by about the age of 10  I give myself kudos for having already played (but not beaten) Softp0rn by then.

EDIT: I just noticed that MD is "Very much Female", which would probably explain why she wasn't corrupted by tawdry adult games at a very young age...

Heh, well I think females like MD, may not have been so inclined to play LSL as us horny male teenagers back in the day!

OMG! You mean you had, like, a *VGA* monitor? No way!?! CGA was, like, totally where it was at on this side of things?! Or, like, Hercules on a real bad day - but that was *soooo* gross

Returning swiftly back to the topic: I always thought LSL2 was the best "cruise ship" Larry, but anyone that's willing to try and remake a Larry game gets my vote. The only concern I have with remakes is the sheer amount of resources you need to produce them - it's a shame to start a project only to get overwhelmed mid-way by the sheer scale of it. I like the idea of back-porting newer games to older systems - working within the limitations can sometimes give you a better focus on what it was that made the original games so good. Anyway, good luck with your project Lounge Lizard - do you know what programming/script environment you're going to use yet?

LSL2 is by far my favorite of the series. Only one that comes close is the LSL4 Beta... but my memory seems to be wiped of what most of that game consisted of... But there's a vague recollection that it was awesome!

That's the one where Larry tries to woo Roberta Williams at the Epcot Centre, right? But it's really Al Lowe in a dress, and he brought the dragon from King's Quest with him...? :D

The reason you can't remember is because I swiped the floppies you borrowed from Al. ;)

There was an LSL4 beta? I didn't know that! What was the gameplay like? Were there at least some beta chicks? Oh, nevermind. That's one sequel which I would like to develop one day as a fan game. In one portion of LSL4, Leisure ends up in Tenebrous, sleeps with Lycentia, tries to go back to her years later after a space-time incident, to which she replies: "You're not welcome here you decrepit old creep!" :D

Thanks for liking my drawing, Moon Dragon! (And all you other young dudes too ;) ). TP is my favorite adventure game too, and for a while I didn't play the LSL games either until midway in college. I kept imagining the LSL games being more like TP. It was a bit of a shock to see how the gameplay actually worked, but I still found them awesome.

LSL7 is much more advanced than either TP or KQ7 (they all share same cartoon style), and while I love it, I think it could use a bit of a fan reinterpretation. To me, the characters on the vessel are a bit like the residents of Tenebrous: a bunch of weird looking people who live in a seemingly bizarre plane of existence. Larry is like a middle-aged adolescent minded horny version of Torin, and I think the PMS Bouncy could use an TP-like enhancement in its interiors.

That's not to say I want it to be narrow and linear as Torin. I was thinking that it should have multiple choices and endings, like those dating games or KQIV, V, and VII. One such multiple path would be the choice not to accidently kill Mr. Boning, but then this may hinder your path to win Captain Thygh with the stock, so you may have to find another way to get the stock. Or you may switch drinks with Dewmi Moore, and you end up seeing her dive out of the ship in a crazy fit before you get a chance to sleep with her. Stuff like that, or better stuff than that. Your call.

It wouldn't be as hard as the other Sierra games either. Larry should have death scenes in this game, but I would love to make it enjoyably challenging like TP. I don't want to maintain the same limited plot of LSL7 (though it does have the same premise), so I think it should be set right after LSL5 (because I want Shamare passenger in the cruise) and to have references from LSL1 and 2.

For example, I was thinking of having the fat mother from LSL2 return to be a passenger in this ship, and there would be a level where she's stalking and chasing you down the aisles, and you have to hide and get rid of her before she ravages you. To make the scene scary, I suggest reusing the music from TP when Dreep grabs Boogle.

I need to work on the concept some more, and see what ideas I could implement. I wish I had a former TP/KQ7/LSL7 animator at my side if I ever could develop it.

You mean like that sequence in SQ2 where you had to stop the alien from smooching you? To lighten the programming burden on yourself, maybe you could have some single-screen QTEs instead - hey, if it worked for Shenmue then it can work for you too

Interesting idea, Lounge Lizard.

To me, this sounds more like a "re-imagining" than a remake, especially considering that you want a version of LSL7 with a graphic style similar to TP, which was made earlier than Larry 7. I wouldn't say that TP and LSL7 have the same cartoon style, though. Torin's Passage has a hand-painted, somewhat whimsical look to it, while Larry 7 has a much more warped, stylized look to its art (much like Larry 5 and 6). It's hard to compare the look of the characters in the two games since they're so varied, but it's interesting how Torin is one of the few characters in his game who isn't overly stylized, while Larry is incredibly stylized compared to most of the characters in his game (with a few notable exceptions).

(Oh, and I'm sorry to be such a nitpicker, but I got the impression that Lycentia's "You're not welcome here" line was directed at the archivist, considering the way he talks about how he recorded her voice and "found her quite rude" when he met her.)

You're right, Akril. It's really a re-imagining. My mind's been preoccupied with school and so forth, I mixed up my terms to describe what I want. I agree with you that the thing which made TP unique was the hand-painted whimsical look to it. What I also liked about TP was how tight the comedic writing was in the game, and how well written it was. Sure, there were missed opportunities to make the game even more immersive, but it's still my favorite Sierra game. It was the first technologically impressive adventure game I've played, and I always loved that I was playing a cartoon movie on my Windows 95 back in the day.

For my re-imagining of LSL7, I want to apply the strengths of TP and previous Larry titles to the look and gameplay. While I want the dialogue to be TP quality, that doesn't mean that heavy erotic imagery will be absent. It'll be tightened up and more suggestive, but still satisfyingly titillating. Again, I'll have to work everything out in a design document to see how it would work out.

(Good point about Lycentia's dialogue. I know she was talking about the recording duck, but I still think it would be funny if she used it on Larry as well :) )
