GK2 Beast Within Real Life Locations Tour

Hi all,

Its been a while! I used to be on the GK4campaign site but that bit the dust and I lost contact with many people. I also managed to lose my youtube channel when deleting an old email account by accident. So a comedy of errors led to me losing touch with many GK fans who wrote me awesome messages on a regular basis, lost all my youtube view count and all my videos had to be uploaded again. So I'm back...here now...in 2013...trying to reconnect.

I’m a big fan of the Gabriel Knight series and did a series of videos visiting the real life locations featured in the Sierra FMV game the Beast Within (A Gabriel Knight Mystery). I visited Germany in 2008 and also in 2009. I wanted to see what game locations I could find and how similar they are in ‘real life’. I took my camera along and captured some of the similarities and differences. I also had a bit of fun at Gabriel and Grace’s expense using some of the more random and funny quotes from the game throughout.

I thought I’d post the links here for anyone who might be familiar with or a fan of the game. I’ve got another series of tour videos coming soon for the third game - Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned.

I had problems with my original youtube account - so below are the updated links to the entire GK2 Beast Within tour videos, in chronological order :

PART 1 (Original Tours 1-5 filmed in 2008)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFxuh4BIzZw
Visits to the Hellabraun Zoo in Thalkirchen (Munich), as well as the Marienplatz, Dinastrausse and the Marienplatz 21 (Ubergrau’s Office) along with the Weiswurst shop

PART 2 (Original Tours 6-8 filmed in 2008)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4mZHmokj1c
Visits to the Ludwig Museum in Herrenchiemsee, Neuschwanstein Castle in Fuessen and the Starnberger Sea (Berg).

PART 3 - Introduction/Schloss Ritter Castle
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKRumq3IRGc
The second Gabriel Knight Beast Within tour begins with a look at Schloss Ritter in Rittersberg. Rittersberg doesn’t exist in reality and this is actually Burg Rabenstein located in Bayreuth, Germany. The game makes everything look so close together when a lot of these places are quite some distance from eachother.

PART 4 - Don’t Mess with Grace Nakimura
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ij7_oOJ21I
A random interlude as Grace phones up and throws a ridiculous tantrum for no reason.

PART 5 - Inside the Ritter Castle
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgvShH8V8Gk
A look inside Schloss Ritter Castle (actually Burg Rabenstein in Bayreuth, Germany). As you can see its nothing like in the game, but still quite stunning.

PART 6 - Rittersberg Square
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWqaG7GnnFY
A visit to Rittersberg square. Actually Rittersberg doesn’t exist and this is a nice walled town called Rothenburg. This is the location of the town hall, gastof and post office that Grace visits during the game.

PART 7 - Rittersberg Post Office
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tvj45xb5Tr4
A visit to the Post office in Rittersberg. Gelda at the post office gives Grace some mail and speaks in German. This exchange actually makes no sense if you understand the language - but is ridiculous enough that hopefully you’ll forgive us.

PART 8 - Grace takes a Trip
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6zO-KA3V5U
Grace takes a trip but forgets that she doesn’t have a car. Brummmmmmm!

PART 9 - The Richard Wagner Museum
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_U8bZ5RxFuE
A visit to the Richard Wagner Museum in Bayreuth, Germany. Very much the same as it appears in the game.

PART 10 - Gerde’s Revenge - Warning some language may offend!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JznHtvykX7E
Grace was totally rude to Gerde for about 3/4 of the game so I thought it would be only fitting that Gerde got her revenge. Re-cut vision from the game. Andrea Martin (the actress who played Gerde) viewed this video and approved. Even she felt Grace deserved to get hers.

PART 11 - A Day in the Life of Rittersberg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d66z9Rxyxl8
A day in the life of the town of Rothenburg. This was Easter Sunday in 2009 and it had quite a nice atmosphere.

PART 12 - Cuckoo Clocks
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwH5cLQRoQ4
A visit to the Marienplatz in search of the Cuckoo Clocks.

PART 13 - St Georg’s Church
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PI_2sG8Jq2E
Not really St Georg’s…but its definitely has some similarities.

PART 14 - The Marienplatz Revisited
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3F3bkVuGbEg
Marienplatz and Dinastrausse re-visited on a sunny day. Includes a visit to Ubergrau’s office, the Weisswurst stand and the post office.

PART 15 - Ubergrau’s Office
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KF-cTteuXOg
Listening in at the door of Ubergrau’s Office and finding a curious poster outside. “Ja!”

PART 16 - Rittersberg Dungeon
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQZuauU-Sfo
The Rittersberg Mayor (straight out of Land of the Giants given his out of proportion-ness) allows Grace into the dungeon where she shares a tender moment with Gabriel as he lays there comatose.

PART 17 - Rittersberg Gastof Goldener
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2G6q-2Mcjx8
No Gasthof Goldener Lowe but plenty of other Gasthofs to choose from.

PART 18 – Gabriel and Ubergrau Awkward Conversation - Warning some language may offend
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrJNxfrw6Uw
Gabriel wants answers but the only thing Ubergrau seems interested in is flirting with him and laughing like the Joker.

PART 19 - Journey to Neuschwanstein
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvTkugNkhi0

PART 20 - Obtaining Ludwig’s scrolls of Wagner’s lost opera
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ixPY2-r1Qc
The quest to find Ludwig II’s lost opera - following in the footsteps of Grace Nakimura.

PART 21 - Abridged Ending
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nOob3C_O78

PART 22 - Finale to the Locations Tour (Overlooking Neuschwanstein)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4TykP_lnkQ
Finishing in the footsteps of Gabriel and Grace.

My blog has also been updated (after years of not having been!) and this also includes all the videos (updated links) in chronological order -

Enjoy :) Its good to be back. I'm looking forward to posting videos for Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned as well....soon...soon! :)

Ahhh Andrea, BBP, Jules - Great to see you all again from the good old days of the GK4campaign forum! I've missed talking about Gabriel Knight :) Tawmis thanks for adding me on facebook to bolster those friend numbers!

Really glad I have your email and that you are around here Bonnie. You were such a help with all my annoying questions about extracting mp3s from the game. Really appreciate it! You'll have to let me know what you want as a credit tag.

Heh. Thanks Jules! I wish I could make the whole thing costume orientated but I don't have that much footage...I did a lot of the videos straight up without the ridiculous wigs etc. There was only so much I could get my wife to go along with. I don't know how she puts up with me! Hahah. She's awesome.

Thank you! I feel less crazy having done things like this when I get the feedback from other fans of the series who always wanted to visit the locations too. When people contact me and let me know that I've inspired them to visit some of these places, its a really awesome feeling. I encourage anyone to visit Bavaria (so many awesome little towns!!) and the South of France. You can actually stay in Rennes Le Chateau...there is an apartment for rent there during the summer. My wife and I have done it two years in a row. Not sure if we'll be back this year but I always hope!

These are the first 3 videos of the new tour (embedded this time)...will hopefully add to these down the line :

Part 1 - Promo/Intro Part 2 - Grace at Sidney Part 3 - Grisly Discovery at the Devil's Armchair

You certainly inspired me, that's for sure.

Just checked, renne le chateau is about 288.497 km from where my grandmother and aunt/cousins live. Maybe I'll ask my dad if he'd like a (rather large) detour next time we go visit them :D . He usually drives when he visits them, so wouldn't be too much of a second detour to go past bavaria as well on the way, though it would make for quite a looonnngggg trip :P .

But it would have to wait untill the summer vacation before I'd have the time anyway.

The cool thing about Europe is that everything is accessible if you plan well enough. Either by train or by car. Although train not so much in southern France as its much better to have a car to get around. So many little towns dotted around the place. I definitely recommend Rennes Le Chateau in the summer, but the pre-summer...like end of June rather than mid July-August. It gets flooded with tourists...and with being so small...it makes it not so fun.....especially in the church if you want quiet time to take everything in. Endless tour groups going in and out. Bavaria is cool as well, but you can do that more easily on the train...there are links to everything. If you plan well you can see all the GK2 sites I did in about 6-10 days. Just depends on what you want to focus on. Good luck!
