Collection DOSBox Not Loading

I have successfully installed the King's Quest Collection and the DOSBox Update, however when I click the respective game shortcut (eg. King's Quest 5.exe) nothing happens. Annoying, but I did sort of find a way around that one by using the DOSBox.BAT file. That works just fine for games 1-5 and 7, however when I use the DOSBox.BAT for 6 - I have no sound (neither music nor voices). So I can currently play 1-5 and 7 using the DOSBox.BAT file, but for 6 I either have nothing or no sound.

I would like to note that I successfully had all 7 games installed and running on my computer once before. However I had to have my hard drive reformatted and upon trying to reinstall the games I encountered these issues. With the reformat did not come an upgrade, I was running Win XP before and I'm still running Win XP. Any help would be awesome as I miss playing these games.

It sounds like you did not install the patch in the collection's installed folder. Use the new installer to do a clean install without need of the patch.

Thanks! That seems to have fixed the shortcut issue and the speech issue in 6. However, I still don't seem to have music or sound effects in 6 and apparently also 5 as I'm positive there was background music in town but it's not there now.

Run the diagnostic for 5 and 6 and attach the logs here.

There are a couple of things that might need to be changed with KQ5, but it should not have caused your issue. Replace the RESOURCE.CFG in the game with the one attached and see if it helps.

I am not seeing what might be causing problems with KQ6. Are you playing it with the DOSBox shortcut or the ScummVM shortcut? Do you hear MIDI files when you play them?

With 6 I am playing with the DOSBox shortcut. I tried opening the ScummVM shortcut, to see if the issue is only with the DOSBox version,I get the message "ScummVM not found. Please reinstall" and I have - twice but I still get that message. And I hear nothing MIDI or otherwise, though the voices seem to work just fine.

If you do not have ScummVM in the default location, the installer should have given the option to locate the copy you wished to use. Where do you have ScummVM installed?

C:\Program Files\ScummVM and it is version 1.6

I just tried reinstalling The Collection and the installer didn't mention ScummVM at all, it didn't seem to detect that it was installed like it did DOSBox nor did it give the option of finding it or installing it.

I found a flaw that would skip my ScummVM macro in some cases with selecting and un-selecting games to install. I added a check to catch if it was missed. Please re-download the installer. I would recommend that you do a clean install of the whole collection.

Okay, reinstallation successful both DOSBox and ScummVM were found. Still no music in the DOSBox version of 6, but all sound is there in the ScummVM version. So at least we know the problem isn't with 6 itself just somewhere in the DOSBox version. And though I prefer the cursor icons in the DOSBox version, at least I can play it.

The win version has the high res dialog portraits. If you really want to have the DOS cursors with the Windows version, open scummvm.ini in the game's folder in Notepad and change:

Newer versions of ScummVM allow you to edit KQ6 in the GUI, click on the Engine tab and just check Use Windows Cursors
