Hello,

I've been dying to play King's Quest 7 on my MacBook Air that runs OS X. Is there anyway to do this? I'm totally new to the Boxer App and DOSBox. Could someone please help? I'd really like to play the game! I was able to run the game for about 20 seconds, but all it would do is show the initial video and then the game would crash.

Hello,

Okay, so I've tried installing KQ7 on my Mac. The initial video will play until the lady's green dress tears on the cactus. At this point in the game, the following message appears:

"We're sorry, you have encountered an internal game error. Please restart your game and restore a saved game. If you have continued problems, please report the following information to Sierra Technical Support:

Error 99: Error loading resource 1304.wav
..\restype.cpp(54)
Script 1250/$6a3"

Help? lol.

Off hand it is hard to say what might be going on. Without further information I cannot really say where the problem is. If Boxer is trying to use ScummVM, bear in mind that ScummVM does not support SCI2 games yet and will most likely will not for some time. If it using DOSBox I will assume that you have the DOS version. The game work perfectly fine in official DOSBox, but the DOSBox that is used in Boxer is more of a branch or an offshoot.

I've got pretty much the same situation as you. I've been able to get all my old KQ games to work in Boxer as well as my Black Cauldron game but KQ7 is killing me... I think maybe I installed it wrong onto my computer and maybe I'm missing some files? I was able to get past the dress rip by adding a path for patches in the Resource.cfg file but all I get is a bunch of looping in-game cinemas and I never get into any gameplay.

I was going to try to install the discs onto a PC then transfer to a Mac like I've read in some of the instructions but now I can't find my Kings Quest Collection so I'm at a loss. If I'm going to buy KQ7 again with the sole intention of playing it in Boxer on my Mac, can someone please point me to where/how to buy it and what version is going to be the easiest to get running on my Mac? I remember not being able to play KQ7 as a kid because I could never get it to run on windows so this is killing me. Twenty-some years later and I still have never been able to play this game...

Should I buy from GOG?
Do I need to get the Kings Quest Collection again?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The problem with KQ7 is that most versions do not include a DOS version. My installer will upgrade the game to v2.00b, which did include a DOS version that can be run in DOSBox. The upgrade patch is a binary level patch, so just extracting the files won't work. The installer must be run for the patch to work. This could be done via Parallels, Bootcamp or possibly using WINE. Short of that, install it on a PC and copy the game folder back to the Mac.

There is a stand alone KQ7 installer that will work with most versions of the game. There are installers for most of the collections, including the highly flawed 2006 VU collection. There is a patch that I made for the 2006 collection for an existing installation. The Steam release is based on this collection and I have been told the patch works on it, too. The GOG KQ games are mostly based on the 2006 collection too, however it is broken up and laid out differently enough that it won't work with it.

EBay is a source, but I am not familiar with these sellers.

Here is the 2006 collection:

Here is the best KQ collection outside of the Roberta Williams Anthology:
