Hunter Hunted movies not playing

Post by notbobsmith »

Hi,
I installed Hunter Hunted using Collector's installer and I have one little problem: the intro movie doesn't seem to play in-game. Everything else seem to run fine. I even get the music off of the CD. I think this might be a codec problem. I can't get the AVI files on the disk to play with a media player either. Any help would appreciated. I've uploaded a diagnostic log file in case that helps.

Last fall I did a "10th anniversary" playthrough of Manhunter (the events of the game tool place starting 9/1/2004). Well, fun fact: 2015 is the year of Hunter Hunted!

The video issue aside, I really have to thank you Collector for putting these installers together. I thought the game was a loss with my last system until I found the installer. (or I would have to try to figure out VirtualPC) The same goes with MoE. I bought the GOG version just so I could get it to install correctly, only to find that your installer works much better.

Try copying the "Movies" folder from the CD to the game's installed folder.

No. I'm afraid that didn't do anything.

You probably do not have the Indeo codec registered. Hold the Windows key and press "R". In the runbox paste the following:

Code: Select all

regsvr32 "%windir%\sysWOW64\ir50_32.dll"
And press enter. It should tell you if registration was successful or not. Note that you will need to do this with administrator rights.

Unfortunately, that didn't work. I used the Command Prompt as a administrator. I did get a message that said the dll was successfully registered, but the movies still won't play, nor can I open them with a media player. When I try, I can hear the audio, but there's no video.

See if the movies will play from your CD. Open your SIERRA.INI file in your Windows directory in Notepad. Look for the [Hunter] entry and change the "CDPath=" to point to your CD drive (i.e. D: or E: or whatever letter represents your CD drive.)

Could it be a video codec issue of some kind?

 I saw that. But is that the only codec? I was trying to remember that "universal" codec (started with a K, I think?)...

The K-Lite installer will disable the Indeo codec, which is the one the game uses. It ships with Windows, but is not registered by default. Running the command above will register it.

Okay, interesting. So I made the change to C:\Windows\Sierra.ini file. CDPath was originally pointing to the game directory on the hard drive. So I changed it to D: and this did trigger the movie to play where it was supposed to: after the Sierra logo. BUT, the movie plays audio only. No video. Just like when I try to open the AVIs with Media Player. It does seem like a problem with the video codec. I'm sure the dll you mentioned registered correctly. I'm not sure if this will help, but I've included text files from the registry of two locations where that dll appears.

You could try searching for a download of the Indeo codec installer.

Thanks for the help. I'll do a little more research into this first. I'm really wary about installing stuff willy nilly. I did find this:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... fb8?page=1

and one of the posts mentioned an installer that works for Win7 64-bit found at http://www.cucusoft.com/codec.asp
I tried installing codinstl.exe, but that didn't work either. I looked at the newest version of K-Lite, but I wasn't sure what part I really needed to install. The fact that the installer kept asking me to install bundleware made me nervous about it too, so I haven't installed that yet. I actually find it kind of odd that media files function like this.

In the meantime, it might be helpful to make a note with your installer. Initially, the game didn't try to play the movies at all until I edited the sierra.ini file. I hadn't played it in a long time and almost forgot the movies were there and assumed everything was fine.

I generally install the entire K-Lite on all machines I set up. I very rarely am missing a codec after that point. However, the codec you need is Indeo.

codex.com seems to be well regarded. http://www.free-codecs.com/Indeo_Codec_download.htm
