I think Space Quest 5 may have captured a lot of people's attention because it was pretty much a mocking of Star Trek throughout the game... so I can imagine that may have captured a large audience who was perhaps familiar with Star Trek and could appreciate the humor?

Actually, SQ1 EGA was the one that got me into SQ. (Although, for the longest time, I just could not get off the spaceship in time and was shot dead by the Sariens). :( No doubt about it, SQ1 EGA was a tough, punishing game. So was SQ2, for that matter. SQ3 was easier... I haven't had the opportunity to play the others yet, so I can't judge. ;)

The first two. I think I played SQ2 first, though. At least that's the one I played the most. Probably because you aren't in danger of dying in the very first scene. Nothing wrong with that, it just freaked me out as a kid lol. With Sariens running around, and an unknown time limit until you blow up and all....I loved all of Sierra's early AGI games actually. They were so colourful and inviting. I loved exploring everywhere. What drew me to Space Quest was that a) it took place in space, and b) the artwork was just so captivating, detailed, and interesting. Mark is a true talent. On top of all that it was a funny game with loads of funny deaths.

Haven't played it in AGES, but that wasn't why I liked it I think, because I had hardly seen any Star Trek when I first played it. Not that the mocking of Star Trek could not be what makes the game in and of itself, of course, because that is certainly possible. I always thought it had to do with development switching to Dynamix along with Crowe somehow. Puzzles feel somewhat more evolved from earlier point and clicks, except that it contains a godo old fashioned frustrating maze.

SQ3 I think might have been might first Sierra game ever. I never got off the junk freighter until I got the hint book, which was maybe a year after I got the game, so I spent ages wandering around and finding things to interact with. It was great.

Once you get off the ship in SQ1, the game becomes a little bit easier. ;) It's still a tough game, but you're not in danger of dying just because you're on the same screen as a Sarien. ;)

I agree about Mark's sense of humour and the funny deaths. One of the reasons that I played the SQ2 remakes was so that I could see (and listen to!) all the death messages - particularly the very gruesome ones (like the one where Roger gets eaten by the plant, or what happens after he gets kissed by the alien). Yikes! Very inventive deaths, to be sure. Plus SQ2 has that creepy dark maze.

Speaking of which, that's the only reason I didn't like SQ2 - if you don't help the little trapped alien to start with (and it's not obvious how you can or even if you should), then the dark maze later becomes a lot more challenging, and you get eaten a lot IIRC. The question is: why do you get punished for something that you didn't know you had to do? :(

Well, I'm sure I could say "That's hardly fair, game!" and the game would say "Is it? Sorry." :P

Thoughts?

I didn't get a computer until around the end of 92 so I missed when most of the games were brand new. First SQ game I bought was SQ1vga and really enjoyed it. Ended up playing them in the order of 1, 3, 5, 2, 4.
