Would anyone who has obtained a KryoFlux or is thinking about getting one please let me know. We have started a project that you may be of interest to you.

I've got a KryoFlux, with a couple of 5.25" drives connected to it. I've been using it to make low-level archival backups of lots of my old floppy-based software, including my original Sierra games. It's an excellent device. What sort of project are you planning?

What Sierra games do you have original disks?

On floppies, I have original disks of PQ2, PQ3, SQ3, SQ4 (EGA), SQ5 (EGA), Colonel's Bequest, Conquests of Camelot, Codename: Iceman, Hero's Quest (EGA original), QFG2, and KQ3, all for DOS. I've also got the Amiga version of KQ1, and if I dig around in my collection, I may turn up some Apple II and C64 stuff. On top of that, I have a boxed copy of HomeWord II for DOS, which was a word processor developed in the mid-'80s by Sierra. I think I've got the original TSN/INN install disks somewhere, too, and plenty more stuff on CD-ROM.

For whatever reason, the board software won't allow me to reply to your PM, or to send you a separate one.

The newly registered group that you are a part of has limitations. It is a spambot countermeasure until it is evident that a new user is not a bot. You should have full rights the next time you log in that will allow you to send and receive PMs.

OmerMor: not a problem. I probably have 3 or 4 sets of install disks for various iterations of TSN/INN packed away somewhere, and if I turn them up, I'll image them and get them posted. I can't say for sure that they don't overlap what you've already got, though.

So I have a setup and it seems to be working. Attempted an Amiga game, unfortunately I ran into bad sectors. (Also "unknown" sectors?)

I see the AmigaDOS ADF and Apple DOS profiles, but I'm unsure which profile to use for PC Jr and PC disks... and what to do when I have an unknown disk about which I have no information, it could be any type of disk with any capacity.

(Kryoflux is telling me that the drives I have - 5.25" and 3.5" - are 83 tracks.)

The unknown sectors are probably just unformatted sectors. SPS has a forensic level program that can determine quite a bit about disks, but it is a professional program with a very high learning curve and is quite (4 digit range?) expensive. You also need to have pretty deep understanding of diskette architecture to use it. What I would suggest is that you simply try different image formats and seeing if you can get a good image. I have not had a lot if luck with PCjr disks and many Tandy booter disks, though I did get a good image of my KQ2 Tandy booter. You can also ask for help on the KryoFlux forums. They may ask you to send them your streams to them to check them out.

MFM sector images (4) are what you want for PC disks. For preservation you want to do stream files as well. If you select multiple outputs and select KryoFlux streams and MFM sector image it will generate both at the same time. You will have the stream files for archival purposes and an img file to explore the contents of the disks.

The GUI I wrote will automatically extract the files from the img and can then check the game and interpreter versions to help catalog the game.

That's cool that your program is able to extract from IMG files and can detect the interpreter and version number.

Can it provide those functions independently of imaging a disk - in other words, can it operate on existing IMG files?

It is not intended to be used that way. It creates a directory structure within an archive's folder where the tool expects to find files. I suppose that you could manually create those folders and move the existing img files to the right folder. The name would need to match, as well.
