Hello!
I am brand new to the forums, but fondly remember Sierra games as my favorite first forays into video-gaming and adventure games. I downloaded the King's Quest Collection on Steam quite a while ago but have only just begun in earnest this week to try and get KQ7 to run on it. I have finally, after much installing, uninstalling, downloading patches, etc etc, gotten it to the point where it will at least open in DOSBox, but then I get this: "Error 42: This game has not been version-stamped."
I am hoping that someone on this forum can assist me in getting it up and running. The other games will open and run without problem. I have Windows 8, for reference.
KQ7 help for steam game with DOSBox
Re: KQ7 help for steam game with DOSBox
My patch was designed for the 2006 VU release. I do not have the Steam release, so I cannot test, but I have heard that my patch can work with the Steam release. The version stamp error suggests that you applied the wrong patch.
Besides all of the major flaws with this release, KQ7 presents the extra problem that version 1.4 was a Windows only 16-bit game. This means that it will not run on most PCs with modern Windows. My patch will upgrade it to version 2.00b, which included a DOS interpreter, which allows it to run in DOSBox.
Without the Steam version I am working blind, but try doing a clean install. Then copy the entire KQ folder to
Download the KQ patch from here: http://sierrahelp.com/Patches-Updates/N ... aters.html then run it and point it the C:\Sierra\King's Quest Collection folder.

Re: KQ7 help for steam game with DOSBox
YOU ARE MY NEW FAVORITE PERSON IN THE WORLD!!! Thank you so much! I won't pretend to understand how it worked, but it did. The game has loaded and for the first time in years I will be able to play. Thank you for creating this patch!
Re: KQ7 help for steam game with DOSBox
Enjoy the game.

Re: KQ7 help for steam game with DOSBox
Okay, I"m hoping you can help me again. The game has been running perfectly for me and I have, several times, saved the game and closed out of it, coming back later to hit "continue old game" without problem. I played last night, saved, closed, and shut off the computer. Today I started the computer, went to the game, and now it closes itself automatically when I say to continue. It runs the intro without problem, but it freezes on "Start New Game" and keeps closing when I try to continue. Any thoughts on how to address this?
Re: KQ7 help for steam game with DOSBox
Sounds like something got corrupted or deleted. Run the diagnostic and attach the generated log as a file here.

Re: KQ7 help for steam game with DOSBox
I am not seeing anything missing. Perhaps a corrupt save file. Try removing the KQ7CDSG.000 and KQ7CDSG.CAT files and restart the game. If you do not want to replay the entire game, just start from the chapter you were playing.
