King's Quest IV SCI install.exe does not work

Post by lukeman3000 »

After using the Collection Series installer with my original Collection Series disc, I get this error when trying to run install.exe:

Additionally, this is what my folder looks like after running the installer, if it's of any relevance:

Remove or rename GM.DRV with a different extension.

For the sake of my curiosity, why does this work? Is it because you modified the install.hlp file and removed the entry for gm.drv because it's deprecated or something similar?

No, The GM.DRV is a fan made driver to add General MIDI like support to SCI0 games. It was mostly for fan games, but has problems with KQ4, so I never added it to to the INSTALL.HLP.

If I'm not getting too off-topic here, why might one prefer general midi over mt-32 for these games that were (as I'm assuming) not originally designed for general midi?

It was an experiment, but I did not pursue it as it did not give very good results.

And what about as it relates to KQ4 Ultimate (with Amiga sounds)? -- I don't seem to have an install.exe for this version. After using your installer for KQ4 Ultimate, should I have install.exe for this version?

A big point of the installer is to use that custom driver, with its combined MT-32 music and Amiga sound. There should be no reason to change the configuration.

INSTALL.EXE should have been included with your source files, not the installer. If your source files came from the 2006 VU collection or Steam it would be missing.
