Oh dear - Python double news...!

Well, I'm not sure why - but for the first time since the 1980s, there's talk of a new Python film - well, new-ish - because Spamalot - the stage musical of the film "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" - is being remade as a film.

Look at it this way: Eric Idle is producing and writing the script. He also wrote the lyrics and music with John Du Prez. And Casey Nicholaw, having already choreographed the show's first run on Broadway, will direct. Nicholaw also directed the Broadway hits The Book of Mormon and Mean Girls, so he's definitely not an amateur.

And lastly, the thing that makes this good news is that the Pythons are better entertainment than a lot of the current crap - I mean, crop - of what passes for entertainment these days. :-)

In other Python-related news (or not), Microsoft's Office 365 - specifically, the Outlook part - has decided that every email that you receive will be classified as junk and will immediately be put in the junk folder. This, of course, ties in with the Pythons because Spam Spam spamidy spam! Spam spam spamidy spam! Loverly spam! Wonderful spam! :-)

And if that was not Pythonesque enough for you, I just found that Amazon are still selling The Album Of The Soundtrack Of The Trailer Of The Film Of Monty Python And The Holy Grail (deep breath). Yes, that's the official name of the product. *grin*

Anyway, being the Python nut that I am, I thought I'd share. ;-)

And on that topic: if you're a fan of film scores, De Wolfe -- the British company that pioneered library / stock music for films and television -- released the music used in MP&THG last year:

Bought this one myself a few days ago...

I am disgusted, appalled, and... not surprised anymore that they would remake Holy Grail. Once I heard audiences were okay with the live-action "Beauty and the Beast" remake, I stopped worrying and learned to love the bomb.

And it's not the worst choice for a remake. The original Grail is one of my favourite comedies, and it has a lightning-in-the-bottle charm that'll never be upended. But the Broadway show does feature new songs, characters and an actual ending. So best case scenario, this movie will be like "Beauty and the Beast", where it's a fun, passable movie that can't possibly top the original, but works on its own terms. Worst case scenario... we'll see?

Also, last time I saw "Spamalot", the guy who played King Arthur kept messing up the "1, 2, 5" joke by saying "3", so my bar for improvement is pretty low at this point.

It wasn't David Hyde Pierce, was it? IIRC, with "Spamalot", he was the original King Arthur.

As for being disgusted, appalled and not surprised - heh. I agree. Then again, the Python films have a history of being re-worked and re-done as different things. (See "The Life of Brian" and "Not the Messiah (He's a Very Naughty Boy)", a comedic oratorio (???). ;)

I've never seen "Spamalot", although I've heard much of the music. So I wonder what this new film will be like.
