Which would you say was the better of Sierra's two main fantasy series and why?

Even if King's Quest VI was one of the best adventures ever produced, a real jewel of story, writing and atmosphere, collectively I have to say Quest for Glory, which is epic, engrossing and, gameplay-wise, balanced and rich.

I've never really cared for the KQ series. The early titles were overly simplistic and the later games didn't hold much interest for me.

I liked QFG a lot more, as it has far greater depth in terms of story and gameplay.

Although I enjoyed both series a great deal, my favourite is definitely Quest for Glory. Not only did the games have more involvement with other characters consistently, but they allowed for more variable gameplay and had a good combination of drama, humour, and adventure. That's partly due to their hybrid nature, but I also think they had the advantage because the series started when the adventure genre was more developed.

Tough call. I grew up on KQ, but QFG seems to have a richer, more developed story through all five parts. On the other hand, KQ has been known for being the ground-breaker. The graphics, the music, the gameplay - every new breakthrough started with King's Quest.

KQ did have the best game of both series (KQ6) but also followed up with the worse game (KQ7 - opinion differs) followed by something completely alien (MoE.) The worst QFG had to offer was QFG3 and even that had the amusing antics of Monkey Manu.

On the other hand, QFG lacks a little more in character development and focuses on stat building instead. So instead of rich conversations, my anonymous hero has people talking at him all the time. What does he says when he flirts with the girls to get them all turned on like that? We'll never know. Then again, KQ suffered from that in earlier games, and when they finally did start talking, they really weren't that interesting to listen to. So maybe silence is golden.

I'll have to go with Quest for Glory in this bout, in spite of my love for KQ. On the whole, it has a more complete story with better defined worlds and supporting characters. Plus most of the puzzles can actually be solved with common sense.

Apples and oranges... ;)

In my case the call is quite easy. I never played any KQ, except KQ5, and that was when I was already in my 20s. On the other hand, I've played QfG since I was 13 and it got me hooked on computer games and RPGs in general.

So I'd say QfG. ;)

Quest for Glory by a country mile. The KQ series has always been unbelievably overrated, and I always felt it was the weakest of the Sierra "quest" series. KQ6 was an excellent game but that was the exception rather than the rule, and I suspect it was due to the involvement of Jane Jensen in the design process.

Wow. I am one of the few who goes the other way.

Which is odd, since my favorite games are indeed RPG games like QFG (games like REALMS OF ARKANIA: STAR TRAIL hold my #1 slot and have for MANY years!) - but that said - I'd side with King's Quest here.

Now before I get beaten, tarred and strung up - hear me out!

While I didn't care much for King's Quest 1 or 2 (although KQ1 was the first Sierra game I ever saw, and barely got to play - LSL1 was really the first Sierra game I got to sit down and play!) - KQ3, KQ4, KQ5 and KQ6 all really make for such a wonderful story - of this whole family! I enjoyed that in some of the games you're playing the father (KQ5), others you're playing the son (KQ3, though you don't know till later), and even later you're playing the daughter (KQ4) - and throw KQ7 in the mix where you're playing daughter and mother - there's this whole sense of not being stuck with the same character (even if you did a different class) - and there was this whole bond with the family as the games progressed! It really snared me. :)

Gotta agree with you, Tawm. Given my tastes it seems that I would be more drawn to the QfG games. While the QfG games do rate very highly with me, especially 4, which falls in with one of my two favorite games, the KQ games hold a special place in my heart. I didn't come to the KQ games until later with KQ6, which so captivated me. The rest of the games filled in the blanks of the story that started for me with 6. As shallow as 1 and 2 were, even those I enjoyed for their historical perspective.

It's just so hard for me to choose. I'd probably have to go with Quest for Glory though. As much as I love the King's Quest series (mainly 4, 6, and, yes, 7), the story and characters of Quest for Glory have always captivated me more than anything else that I've ever played (with the exception of Gabriel Knight).
