The Tawmis Coloring Book (formerly "Coloring Ka-Zar")

Post by Tawmis »

I doubt anyone will care, but I am gonna share anyway!

EDIT: Because I moved stuff on FB and the images weren't uploaded here, there were several dead image links.

So I will just update this first post to say - this is where I will post where I go through and find some B&W images and digitally color them (usually pretty quick) - it's like building LEGOs. Very therapeutic for my brain.

Nice work!

but how did you clean the yellow to white ? The woman on the left (with the golden shoulders) has some weird white dots, that aren't visible in the yellow version.

Thank you! For getting the yellow to white - it's using the "Color Dipper" (where you click on a color with the eye drop icon thing) - and tell it to replace it with white, then color replace where ever you need to with the brush. And rinse and repeat until you get most of the shades of yellow out of the photo. And the result is (because I am taking out so many yellows) - it causes those "dots" where the yellow (in the yellow image) is a part of the shading. I typically try to go in later and touch those up after I finish with some smudging.

Here's some of my older ones:
Phoenix/Dark Phoenix (I don't like how these came out, but whatever) - http://comicreliefpodcast.com/archives/478
Rom vs Dire Wraith (the image is clickable for a larger size), pretty simple but fun - http://comicreliefpodcast.com/archives/475
Cutter & Skywise of ElfQuest: http://comicreliefpodcast.com/archives/459
Manslaughter vs the Defenders (one of my favorites I did) - http://comicreliefpodcast.com/archives/456
The Defenders (loved how Gargoyle turned out in this one) - http://comicreliefpodcast.com/archives/453
Uncanny X-Men vs Alpha Flight (this one was fun, one of my favorite comic panels, but a nightmare because of all the colors!) - http://comicreliefpodcast.com/archives/450
X-Men vs Dark Phoenix (love how this one came out!) - http://comicreliefpodcast.com/archives/447
X-Men vs Juggernaut (this was mostly about how to learn to color Colossus and make him look metallic still) - http://comicreliefpodcast.com/archives/444
Another one of the Defnders that I loved - http://comicreliefpodcast.com/archives/441

I've done more that I've never posted.

It helps me relax my brain.

The dots are just part of the halftone coloring used in the original printing. Think of it like dithering.

Oh, I see - you had meant in the actual (real colored) cover. Yeah. Back then comics were colored by "dots" to give the illusion of specific colors. Red and white dots would give a pink appearance, for example, rather than using pink ink. As Collector said, like dithering. It's also the quality of the scan (I grabbed that from google). If I scanned my copy it'd probably have a much smoother appearance.

For example if you look at this scan of the cover (again, from google) - Belasco (the main bad guy cutting the cake) looks smoother:

Thank you. It's like LEGOS. It puts my mind to ease, makes me focus. It's tedious to be sure (it's all layers), but rewarding usually.

Nice work. :) I am always envious of people who can draw, or even colour. I tried it once, when I was young and stupid - never had the patience. (I told you I was young and stupid). ;)

Er, now I'm curious. Why is someone (the villain, I presume) cutting a wedding cake with a sword, and why is the person at the bottom right - for lack of a better word - headbutting the cake?

(Decades before facepalm, or facedesk, there was "facecake"...) ;)

I am very envious of people who can draw. My friend Lindsay Archer has that talent. When she was visiting San Diego, we went to one of those restaurants that have the table covered in paper - and in 2 seconds she drew this amazing horse photo that was beautifully shaded. I was barely drawing an eye ball, with no skill.

So, Belasco (the villain cutting the cake) - is doing so because it's... what's the right word? A reference? A nod?... to when you cut the cake. Ka-Zar (the guy in the tux with the knife) and Shanna (the woman in the bridal gown) are supposed to be references to being a wedding decoration toppers (that sites on the top of the cake - sort of like this). So she's not head butting the cake (if you mean Shanna), she's jumping off the cake.

Er, I think there was some misunderstanding here. For a start, I can see that the villain (Belasco) is cutting a wedding cake; I was wondering why the sword (other than being a fairly obvious way to show how savage/heartless/etc. he is). ;)

OK, so I can see that Ka-Zar and Shanna are (or were) presumably getting married, and Belasco is interrupting the wedding in traditional comic book style. So far, so good. :) What I am puzzled about is the person in the bottom right, just below Shanna. He has blond hair, and is wearing a kind of bronze armlets and a bright blue cape, and it looks like he is "headbutting" the cake. :?

Or perhaps I'm completely mistaken and "he" is part of Shanna? In that case, his cape is part of Shanna's dress, his arm is Shanna's leg, and his blond hair is ... not something I'd like to speculate about! (Unless Shanna has a horse's tail?) :?

Also, upon reviewing the picture, I'm surprised to see that Shanna's wedding dress has armoured sleeves. Was she expecting trouble, maybe? ;)

The sleeves don't really look armoured to me. More like just tight fabric.

There is no one to the right of Shanna. It's the front of her dress and her leg (with a knife being held near her ankle). I think what you're seeing that's "behind" her is the inside of the cake (the yellow stuff) being torn apart by Belasco cutting the cake. Other yellow pieces of the cake can be seen in the other pieces that are flying off.

And they're not armored sleeves; they're just normal sleeves (just colored drawn to have "layers"). But if you look closely, she is wearing her normal fur bikini beneath her wedding dress.
