Some ideas that Al Lowe probably rejected...

Post by Rath Darkblade »

...and then again, probably not - because I had these ideas when I got up two days ago, and they wouldn't let go until I wrote them down. ;) Hope you enjoy.

Future Leisure Suit Larry games - or maybe not
(written 3 December, 2018)

Luxor Larry (in French: Larry De Luxe).
After a rip in the space-time continuum (don't laugh, time in the LSL series was always... flexible... after the end of LSL3), Larry travels back in time to ancient Egypt, and his face appears on the Sphinx.

The ancient Egyptian men immediately assume he's a god and start to worship him, and he teaches them about how to flirt with women, 70s-style.

Hilarity ensues.

(What? Larry gets to time-travel 30 years into the future in "Wet Dreams Don't Dry", so why can't he time-travel into the past?) :P
------------------------------------------
Larry in my Latte.
This game follows after "Wet Dreams Don't Dry", in which Larry has to deal with hipsters in the 21st century.

Larry queues up for coffee. Behind him is a hipster.

Once Larry gets his cup of joe, the barista - as a joke - makes Larry's image in the hipster's cup of soy decaf hazelnut latte.

The hipster's about to drink it when he sees the picture of Larry (shades of the Shroud of Turin and similar).

The hipster freaks out, decides that Larry is a god, and starts the First Church of Larry Laffer, Orthodox. (Men and women separate, of course). Needless to say, the latte becomes a holy artifact.

Hilarity ensues.
------------------------------------------
Larry Las Lobos.
This happens just after the events of LSL7 (when Larry won the Best Dressed Competition).

Suddenly, leisure suits are "in", baby - and a movie director sees the news, and invites Larry to play the lead in a new movie.

In the contract, the title of the film says, "Viva L..." but the director puts his cup of coffee on the rest.

Larry assumes that it's a remake of "Viva Las Vegas", and that he is set to play Elvis Presley, so he signs without reading any further.

When he arrives on set, he finds out that the film is actually called "Viva Los Lobos" - a tribute to the American rock band from L.A., California. And it's being filmed on the mean streets of Compton, L.A. County.

Aiiieeee! Larry must escape by any means necessary.

(So what does the LSL theme of sleeping with anyone have to do with it? There's the old stereotype about sleeping with the director - also known as, "So what'd you to win this part, sleep with the director?" etc.)

Hilarity - naturally - ensues.
------------------------------------------
What do you think of these, eh? ;)

You'd need to kick this up a notch by tying it to Space Quest IV.

Have Larry get inside one of these:

It's the Time Pod from Space Quest IV. That way you're also doing a nod to another Sierra franchise. (And then the question becomes - is Roger Wilco perhaps on Earth when he parked it there?)

Larry could work the coffee shop and when a beautiful woman approaches he asks, "Would you like me to cream your coffee?"

Heh - talk about the potential of hitting racist stereotypes in such a game? :)

*ROFLOL* I didn't think of that, but you're right. That could set off a whole bunch of time-traveling adventures for Larry. :)

Oh dear... euphemisms! ;)

Or, perhaps, "Would you like me to sprinkle some chocolate crumbs on your cappuccino?"

Er, I'm sorry - I don't understand. Was I being racist? :( I didn't mean to, and I apologise if I was.

I've never been to CA (or to the USA), but even I know that Compton is a very tough area. (I know of NWA's "Straight Outta Compton" (1988), and according to google, it's still one of the most dangerous cities in America). I'm not sure why it's so dangerous, but I'm pretty sure that Larry isn't going to do well there.

Also, I was riffing on the "Las Vegas/Los Lobos" misunderstanding. I like Los Lobos and their sound. ;)

You were not being racist, no. But I am saying, if someone tried to make that a game - about Larry being stuck in Compton; it's going to come out racist.
If you look at the demographics, it's all African American and Latino that make up the population. What makes Compton so dangerous is the high gang (and drug) activity. This will give a good idea about how dangerous it is.
So essentially a game, centered around, Larry in Compton would probably feature a lot of black and latino "gangsters" - which is going to cast a "stereotype" that all black and latino people are "thugs."

Yikes. I simply wanted to use the most dangerous place that I could think of, simply to increase Larry's motivation to get out of the "Viva" contract. But yes - probably best not to use Compton.

I know that one of "Weird Al" Yankovic's albums is called "Straight Outta Lynwood" because Lynwood, where Al grew up, borders on Compton. Hence, on the cover art, Al does the "gangsta rap" look. So, maybe this game could be set in Lynwood, instead? (And maybe, if Weird Al agrees, Larry could meet him! What a strange meeting that would be. Besides, Al's been animated before too - on "The Simpsons" and "My Little Pony" and elsewhere).

I think what's always worked nicely for Larry is that it typically takes place in fictional places (Lost Wages, Nontonyt [sp?] Island, etc).

These are funny! I'm not overly familiar with the series yet, but is like to give them a try someday.

Maybe this could be a fun concept for the community games section - rejected Sierra game ideas, where we come up with deliberately silly and nonsensical plots for sequels. Any interest?

Whoops.*blush* Tawm, you're right. No worries... the location can come later. (Maybe it takes place on the backlot of a studio in Hollytwig! (A parody of - gee, come on...) ;)

I'm glad you enjoyed them, SHP. :) That's exactly what I was going for - intentionally silly plots for sequels. Sure, I'd be interested!

Yeah, let's do it! :D

As for REALLY silly and nonsensical:

Leisure Suit Laura - Larry travels back in time to the time of Laura Bow. She sees his leisure suit and immediately thinks, "You know what? Trousers look like they're much comfier than a dress." She swaps her dress for a leisure suit, which shocks her contemporaries, who call her a "loose woman". Why? Because - shock, horror - they can see her legs!!! :P
