Unrecognized Fatal Exception GK3

So, I had just slaughtered the demon and just as I'm about to relish in Gabe dumping Madeline I get the dreaded Unrecognized Fatal Exception.

It really destroys the game for me. Good thing I could play it (sort of) on my Dino before its E-drive took up smoking. I've been browsing the net for possible solutions.

The old one that was posted at the Vivendi-forums, was that the American version had corrupt BRN files on disk 1, and by replacing them with the same BRNs from disk 2, the problem could be circumlocuted.

The error always pops up at the same points though, during the playing of the Bink files: Wilkes saying "I got some celebrating to do" in the Day 2 5-10PM closing video, Grace saying "No but I'll think I go down" in the Day 3 10-12 AM opening video, and somewhere in the Wandering Jew video. But also the crow pecking in the ending scene, and now the Madeline-Gabriel moment in the ending I enjoy so much. A solution we discussed here is replacing the offending Bink on the harddrive with the one on the CD. But that doesn't work always, plus it takes you out of the game terribly. Plus if it works, the same video may not play the next time.

There's been something about a MPeg4.ax file in Systems 32 in the Windows directory that causes the issue. On older computers a name change of this driver worked, provided you'd change it back immediately after playing, but on my Win 7 I can forget about it already.

Has there ever been a working solution to the infamous error?

I've never seen this error, much less had to overcome it, so I'm not sure if any of these would help - but you might wish to give them a try:

Google search for this error

Perhaps the video would help. Or the discussion thread at GOG. :)

Good luck!

Post your save game before the error appears. See if one of us can get it just past that.
