Anyone else following the Scummvm SCI development?

I've been playing around with the latest svn of Scummvm and you can get all the way to the labyrinth under Mordack's castle with the floppy disk version of King's Quest V. The only crashes I've seen so far have been on death screens, and the labyrinth isn't completeable just because the graphics flicker black.

Not bad considering you'd get stuck in the game just a few days ago because the witch would never trigger in the forest :D

I have only tried a few early SCI games. Gluten is still not very developed. It is something that I am keeping an eye on, though. The only real reason to want ScummVM for SCI games is for the few Windows SCI games that DOSBox is not a solution for, but it will be a while before those games are supported. There is not a single SCI game that ScummVM supports that DOSBox is not already a near ideal solution.

Portability is also another good reason. Having these games on the Wii and DS are quite a good thing.

Also it might be a better solution for those who want to run the windows version of Kq6 for those people who prefer the high-res talking pictures. If sucummvm can run windows versions of the Programs it all ready supports.

That is the main thing that I am waiting for out of this.

There is a WII port of ScummVM.

Well, yes and no. There is a Wii port, but in order to use it, I believe you need The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Even if you have it, Nintendo has released recent updates that remove this ability.

I suppose you could format the Wii (you can do this from the options page), but then you'd need to set everything up again. If you're really hardcore about ScummVM, however, it might be worth it.

You can also put ScummVM on other platforms, like the PSP, Gamecube and iPhone, including most computer operating systems. I haven't bothered to load it onto my PSP, but it can be done.

Not having a WII, I never payed much attention to issues one can have with ScummVM on the WII. I was just aware the there is a port.

I'm not criticizing you. :)

I only know because I have Wii and looked into it. If I didn't have that console, I'd have no idea.

So if you got this on the Wii, are you telling me you could play Sierra games on your Wii?

The AGI games are already supported and the early SCI, too. Next to no SCI VGA games are at this point.

That's true and untrue. Yes the new updates prevent the Twilight Hack from functioning but they always circumvent it with a newer hack. Plus if you've already installed the Homebrew Channel via the Twilight Hack previously there's nothing Nintendo can do with any updates to prevent you from running homebrew like ScummVM as the Homebrew Channel renders the Twilight Hack unneeded once it's installed.

Sounds entirely too complicated for my brain... :?

It really isn't, though.

1) Download and copy the Twilight Hack to your SD card
2) Download and copy the homebrew channel installer to the root of your SD card (it's a boot.dol file)
3) Put the SD card into your Wii and copy the Twilight Hack save file over to the Wii's internal memory
4) Run Twilight Princess and load the Twilight Hack save file within the game. It'll crash and immediately launch the Homebrew Channel installer which will put The Homebrew Channel on your system menu.

The Wii version of ScummVM can then be put onto your SD card in the apps/scummvm folder and you can launch it from the Homebrew Channel. Painless. And definitely worth it.

Though after doing some research, it looks like the Twilight Hack is going to be retired as of the System Menu 4.0 update from Nintendo (though it'll work on any earlier version. But the latest Wiis in stores probably come bundled with 4.0). But there's a new exploit to replace it that has yet to be released...

There's also a dude out there who's created a ScummVM Channel for the Wii which, after you install it, will launch the ScummVM that's already on your SD Card without having to launch the Homebrew Channel first. Cuts down on time and it looks nice on your Wii menu :).
