GK1 Day 9 Stuck/Cursor Problem

Hello! This is my first time posting...but hopefully not the last. I'm excited to find a forum with people that still play the old games like I do! Although I'm a little confused about whether this will be the final forum or the one at the GK4 website.
Anyway...I am playing my old GK1...originally it was on diskettes but I transferred the files to CD awhile back. It's my favorite game so it has followed me from computer to computer...operating system to new operating system. I am playing on a new computer that has Vista with the newest version of DOSBox and haven't had any problems until now.
On Day 9 in the mound...just after I put all the tiles in place and the mummies come alive...I get past the mummies and meet up with Uncle Wolfgang...he talks to me...then when it is my turn to use the rod to close the door and make the mummies sleep again I am unable to switch from the "walk" cursor. I have played this game many times before and never experienced anything like this problem. Thoughts? Solutions? Anything?
Any help would be hugely appreciated!

Lovekat, this forum is the one for technical issues with GK, and the GK campaign forum is the one for talking about GK in general with people who also love the games. (And also where we'll help with hints and spoilers if you get stuck with a puzzle in the games.)
Hmm. The problem you're describing is not one I've experienced. Perhaps someone here who's played GK on Vista can help.

I've not encountered this, either. The OS won't be an issue as it is being played in DOSBox. You might try playing around with the DOSBox settings, such as cycles, etc. Try normal core and about 8000 cycles. I don't think that it will make a difference as you have managed to get as far as you have without issue, but you can try different audio drivers from the Sierra installer. There are sometimes issues with the Sierra SoundBlaster driver. It might be that most have not had this issue because most have the CD version of the game.
Have you applied the
relevant patches for the floppy version of GK1?

I encountered this problem only once, playing on XP.
I restarted my machine, loaded a previous save and all was well.

Good to know! I'll have to sign up on that one too.

Thanks for the suggestions! Unfortunately I do already have the patches and I've tried going back to an earlier save already with no luck...plus I did try messing with the faster or slower cycles on DOSBox and it didn't change anything either.
I'm starting to think maybe I should just invest in the CD version...although since I've never played the version that has voices it might be kinda weird...

You'll enjoy it very much - except for the not-very-good narrator. However, all the other voice acting is terrific. Tim Curry does a superb job with Gabriel, and you'll recognise the voice of Mosely if you've watched NCIS, and so on.

My dear, dear Al.
I have to disagree.
Virginia Capers did a wonderful job as the Narrator: she was warm and hen-y, sarcastic but always caring, chatty and witty but also a bit naive, especially when Gabriel outdo himself in terms of sleazy innuendos - I totally loved her work!
The only voice actor I didn't like, in the first GK, was Efrem Zimbalist Jr. as Wolfgang.

It's so fascinating that particular voices or styles can please one person and not another. I could barely abide the narrator for GK1, and found her monotonous. I thought her ability to phrase intelligently was limited... but her narration has clearly impressed you very positively!
I think the palm for best game narration must go to QfG4, though - did you enjoy that rich and ironic timbre? I loved it - he has a wonderful style.
(Okay, I admit it - I edited my post because there was a little typographical error with GK4 instead of QfG4. Mind you, if there WERE a GK4... <grin>)

It's indeed fascinating, and it's only fair that - sometimes - it's simply a matter of taste. Virginia Capers reminded my of my grandmother, of the way she slowly put together each word so she always sounded to me like a perfect choice.
On the other hand, assuming that you're talking about QfG4, yes Jonathan Rhys Davies did an amazing job... but if you're talking about GK4... please, please, send me a copy - I'll be a Campaign's slave for three thousands years!

I never ran into that problem but I never played the floppy disk version of the game I played the Cd rom version.
Ya go invest in the cd rom version of GK1 its well worth it. Also If you are a starwars fan you should recognize Mosely's voice that would be the most obvious. If you are a Star Trek fan especially the Next Generation you should Recognize the guy who does Dr. John's voice. I think its Dr John. If you dont own GK2 I would suggest on getting the Gabriel knight Mysteries collection it has both the Cd rom version of Gk1 and Gk2.

I would whole heartedly agree. Not only are the voices nice, but obviously using the CDROM is going to be much easier.

Except that the Mysteries collection goes for bookoo Bucks. Far cheaper to get the standalone versions of both games. If you want to hear the GK soundtrack that comes with the collection, you can hear it here.

True. I got mine for a reasonable price. I forget how much though.
