Space Quest 1 VGA Box - How did this happen?

In Space No One Can Hear You Clean, er, Scream. But if you post in this forum about Space Quest - someone's sure to hear you. I think. Try it, anyway!

Space Quest 1 VGA Box - How did this happen?

Post by Tawmis »

So while making my little music video things that I've been uploading to my "Let's Play Sierra Games" channel -

I noticed something. Something that's eluded me for a very, very, very, very long time. And I blame all the Space Quest collections (15th Anniversary, this one, that one, GoG)...

As I was making the background image for the music video - I realized, I had no scans of "Space Quest 1 VGA" box set...

Well. It's because...

How on God's Earth, did I never pick this up?

I used to pick up anything and everything SIERRA back in the day. Own most of the hint books, not because I needed most of them - but because it came from Sierra so I wanted it.

Now, Space Quest 1 VGA Box fetches upwards $100!

Too rich for my blood these days. Way too many other bills! (WAY too many...)

Is there any Sierra game you wish you'd picked up (even if it was after the fact - like I get, not everyone is an old man like me who was old enough to buy these games as they were coming out) :D

 Too late. It's now $125. ;)

I think I actually have an original QfG4, on floppies, in a box somewhere.

(I know I have Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis on floppies. I know it's not Sierra, but meh!) ;)

Funny, I just assumed you had all the QFG games, because of how familiar you are with them! :D

Yeah, I have two different EGA covers of SQ1 (one I bought originally, the other was ebay a few years back). But not SQ1VGA. I have no idea how this eluded me until last night.

:( I was too young to afford the QfG games when they came out. I'd just turned 16 when QfG4 came out, and I still couldn't afford it until years later.

The EGA SCI and VGA SCI covers were the same.

Sorry - I meant the original EGA covers.

Those are both rereleases. If you are talking about the AGI versions, then there are more than those two. There are at least two different black box versions. Since there is an SCI EGA version most usually refer to the AGI as "AGI". There are several other Sierra games that were released in both variants of VGA and EGA. And that is not counting and original SCI0 and later SCI1+ games like QfG1 or the early VGA era where some SCI games included an EGA driver for an otherwise VGA game.

Yeah, I think my buddy Shawn (whom I used to go 50/50 with on a lot of these games, because they were like 59 dollars - back in 1985 - which is crazy!) - I think he ended up with the Black Box and I bought another one later. Because there's some games where we bought it twice - because my Tandy 1000 SX didn't have High Density Floppy Drives (that some games required later) or I picked up the 16 Color Version (King's Quest V) while he picked up the 256 Color Version. So I know that he and I had mix and match of Disks and Boxes. I'd love to get my hands on one of the SQ1 Black Boxes, but those are even more expensive that the SQ1 VGA Remake.

Besides the black boxes there are a couple of other ones that I would love to get a hold of, like the GK1 origami box or the The Even More Incredible Machine parallelogram box. Outside of the ones with unusual packaging I want some of the games that were not released in this country, like some of the earlier Coktel Vision games. But given the prices these days it is not likely I will ever get them.

I have all four SQ1 boxes (thankfully). Picked up the SQ1VGA box last July on ebay. And yeah it wasn't cheap. But I'm a SQ aficionado so I had to have it. Interestingly, sometimes SQ1VGA disks came packaged in SQ1AGI boxes (Troels has one) because I guess they'd run out of inventory of the VGA box.

I say "all four" but I guess technically there are five with the second black box with no grid lines on the cover. I prefer the grid lines anyway though and I don't think I need to be that pedantic to hunt the other one down....least not until I'm swimming in money (someday it'll happen! :D ).

Do you have one with the elusive flipped image of the Two Guys in front of the Sierra dome?

Yep.
Was that on the black box or one of the others?

I do not. It's not on my black box. I thought for sure I had one because I remember seeing it when I was a kid. I guess not. But it's not flipped on any of my boxes.

Sigh...that means I have to track one down eventually.

AFAIK it was a misprint on only a few boxes (like sub-1000 or something...super rare). I don't think it was the black box. But I could be wrong.
