Probably because of the limits with the graphics back then.

I gotta say I'm overjoyed you're using aspect-corrected images for these wallpapers. (that's how his face is supposed to look)

Yeah! I was setting up all my games through DOSBox and thought it'd be cool to make some wallpapers out of the Splash screens (and use some scenes from the game; like Manahahanana's face there is from just after the splash screen and the credits for the game begin) - helped fill in just having a black void with just the KQIII logo in the center.

It's a perfect arrangement!
