What, no Trolls? No Council of Elrond?

Something here makes no sense. When Bilbo finds the ring, he's holding a sword; but that sword is never mentioned before. Where did Bilbo get the sword? ;)

Well, ye have to understand, it's quite abridged. And targeted (back in the day) for very young kids.
So smaller things were left out (trolls, council of Elrond, and also Bilbo getting Sting). But it's easy to explain that they had weapons, because Thorin does say "We had to fight our way out" - so good chance, in order to fight the goblins, they had to have weapons. So without context, one could assume that the sword (Sting) is just a sword Bilbo was given by the dwarves (not story accurate, sure, but if you want to delve into why a kid's record doesn't mention Sting, it's an easy leap).

Yes, the "Rankin Bass" logo gave me a bit of a clue that this was for kids. :)

I also remember the drawing style from watching (or trying to watch) the Rankin Bass LOTR .................. which was pretty darned awful. :P

Tawm, I think you might like this:

The Lord of the Rings - Soundscape by Phil Dragash.

It's now held in archive.com - a full, unabridged reading of LOTR, complete with different voices for the characters, sound effects, and music. :) I've listened to it for about an hour and a half now - it's great! :D

Hope you like it too. :)
