DOSBox 0.73 has just been released. This one is a big step forward. Our favorite emulator just got better:
Download the new DOSBox, now.

Also, for those that prefer to use a frontend for DOSBox, Ronald Blankendaal (rcblanke on VOGONS) has also updated my favorite frontend, DOSBox Game Launcher for the new DOSBox.

I see a ton of fixes, but they usually have that for each upgrade for DOSBox... so what made this one a major change in your eyes, Collector, that I am not seeing?

I like the addition of video and machine modes that DOSBox can now emulate. The logo on startup is pretty annoying, though.

Is there a way to turn that off? If not, I'm fine with the older version (at least for right now).

It was not just a bunch of bug fixes. A lot of new features have been added. EGA emulation has been added, more video card modes and improvements VESA emulation. It has several additions and improvements to the audio emulation, as well. As far as improvements/bug fixes go, it addresses two issues that have been around in several versions of DOSBox. SoundBlaster emulation in some Sierra games has had glitches and the Coktel Vision CD games have had issues with the MSCDEX emulation.

No, you can't turn the logo off. Not unless you alter the source code and compile it yourself. They put it there to "brand" DOSBox and also so people wouldn't confuse it with the command prompt. I'm actually not bothered by it anymore. Just wish it would show in full-screen when you start it in full-screen mode.

I'm not sure why people seem to be irritated by the logo. It is designed to be displayed for less than a second. I can't blame the devs for doing it. Many have asked for help on the DOSBox forums, only to find out that even though they had downloaded DOSBox they were actually using the NTVDM. Then when ID first re-released some of their old games they hid the fact that the releases were using DOSBox, even dumping the documentation and the GPL from it. Intentional or not, the logo would have identified it.

Not to mention when you bust your ass off doing this free work for people - it's nice to show off your hard work with a label.

It'd be like complaining about the Sierra Logos in the beginning of each game. :)

The Sierra logos were annoying. In fact, I hate seeing any company's logo at the start of a game or a movie. :P

looks promising I like how you can set the processor to a certain one. which might help with the timer bug based Sierra games and along with the NRS timer patches might be an even better combination than before.

I would be very surprised if it changed compatibility for those games.
The cputype option doesn't control the speed of DOSBox. Mainly identification commands and some paging related options

Setting cycles at ~8000-10000 will fix most SCI timer bugs.
