Ugh. This is brutal. Just got to where I need to book passage to Gaza and I don't have enough coin. And there's no going back to Camelot for more. So somewhere I was too kind with my coin apparently. (I think back at the hunter? I donated coin for him and his family...) So that dead-ended me. 🙁 And that ice bit is a nightmare that I am going to have to repeat...

It's been a while since I've played. I don't remember running out of money.

So I think I made a mistake with the hunter. I bought a spear from him (which is used after the boar). But I also bought furs off of him, which it says it will send to Camelot.

That will leave you short of being able to purchase passage to Gaza, which is 3 gold. I suspect that you can do some gold, silver, and copper - but even when I gave all I had, it wasn't enough.

So I restarted - and managed to finish. There were a few hard parts, for sure. (The ice was a nightmare... both times, less so the second time, since at least this time I knew to use an item... rather than the first time, thinking it was trial and error for a long time...)

It's rendering now then I will be uploading it probably tomorrow by the time it finishes rendering. I left all the way when I got to the dead-end (of money) and the restart. May even just do a second version of just the restart, since that's a little cleaner.

The ice? *puzzled*

I never finished this game. I don't think I ever beat the Black Knight. It's impossible. :(

Beating the Black Knight takes persistence. If I remember correctly, you have to watch what he does and block accordingly.

The ice is painful. So. Very. Painful.

As for the Black Knight. He knocked me off a few times - until I realized an easy way to beat him.

I found the key wasn't so much as defending yourself, but concentrate on knocking him off his horse.

I think he knocked me off my horse... six times?

Then I saw something. Usually when he rides at you, if you go for his upper right shoulder, you can knock him off his horse. Once I focused on that, it was a cake walk. So much so that when I started over, after the dead end, I think I got him three times in a row? (He might have knocked me off, but it was much easier than it was the first time I tried to joust him).

The only part of the game I did not care for was the ice. It seemed excessive in the amount of screens you had to do this thing.

Even the second time (although the second time was easier because I figured out after dying... 30 times?... that there was an item to use and it wasn't just walk very slowly) :D

But even with that item, it's excessively a pain. Way more than it needed to be.

I always forget how beautiful (especially the music in this game!) and the story is (so rare, the main character's love interest is a love triangle).
The arcade sequence with the ice - was too much. Even when I figured out what to do - I felt like it was too many screens. The timing of the boars and spear was a pain - because it was difficult to get that right - and not being able to save the progress was a further pain. The Black Knight took a few shots to figure out how to knock him off his horse. I liked the riddles and the references back to the goddesses - but that's why I probably didn't play this as much as I always did other games - because there's a lot of referencing back to the manual (which until I got it on gog, I didn't have an easy way - now I have the pdf).

I made two versions - the first is my play through, including where I hit a dead end (which was after the ice bit, sigh) - when I didn't have enough money to book passage to Gaza (which was 2 hours and some change into the game!). The second one, I did something different - after the prayers - I went back to the treasury and refilled the bag full of coins again. I also didn't give as much money to the hunter in the woods. The second video is obviously shorter, since it doesn't include the dead end.

Fun little thing that I had saved in my Conquest of Camelot box.

You can see my various scores, the directions given at the end, abbreviations for the coins...

But look at the date/year and time it was originally beat by me!

I love I have all these little things in most of my Sierra games (notes, maps, etc., I wrote/drew).

Mike Corum is the father of my friend, Shawn, who introduced me to King's Quest 1 EGA (but it was like 4 colors and boot from a disk) and LSL1 EGA.

4 color would be CGA, not EGA. Also there was an EGA variant of LSL1SCI, so distinguishing between AGI and SCI is better to use those terms to avoid confusion. The exception would be HQ/QfG1EGA and QfG1VGA (SCI0.1 vs SCI1.1).

Is there a release of King's Quest 1 that is CGA specific only? Would have been on a 5.25" if my memory serves. (Which... being the old man I am... don't count on that too much). Is that the first King's Quest with the Knight on the cover? Unfortunately I do not remember the box my friend's father had.
Was trying to find it (looking around like sites like this: https://nerdlypleasures.blogspot.com/20 ... quest.html )

And yes, OK - Leisure Suit Larry AGI. :)

3AM? That's dedication! :)

These things are pretty cool. Little time capsules. I still have notes for Manhunter and Starflight.

Yeah. I love that I still had this stuff. I posted a few of the other ones here on the forum, from my games (including like the original receipts for the games).

And I just googled - 11/13/1990 was a Tuesday. By 1990 it was a year after I had graduated high school, so at least it wasn't a school night. :D

No. It was machine dependent. If the machine was CGA the game would have used "CGA_GRAF.OVL". If EGA, "EGA_GRAF.OVL". if PCjr, "JR_GRAF.OVL". Some of the early booter allowed switching between composite color mode and RGB on the fly, otherwise it just used the appropriate one for the graphics hardware of the machine.
