Phantasmagoria 1:
GOOD: Pretty good acting from the cast which probably the exception to the rule for FMV games. I don't think it would have worked as well if you didn't feel for Adrienne which would not have been possible if her performance wasn't as good as it was.
BAD: That infamous scene wasn't necessary.
Phantasmagoria 2:
GOOD: The setup for the game is arguably better. It's made very clear in Phantasmagoria 1 that you released a demon. Phantasmagoria 2 has a real mystery, but...
BAD: the resolution to the mystery is just bonkers.

For the bad you mentioned - I assume it's the bathroom scene between the two of them?
It's very uncomfortable (which shows how well, as you said, they acted) - but it does feel like it was needed. It truly is a big turning point for him, and kind of shows this unredeemable aspect by this point - making your choices to get "rid of him" at the end easier.

Phantasmagoria 2 is a very good game - until Dimension X. It goes to #$%^ from that point on.
It's like they had this idea - didn't know how to wrap it up - and came with a horrible concept. And horrible puzzles in that area. It's just... ugh.
