Great graphics, great music. I imagine this is the best game to recommend to newcomers aswell.
Do you consider this the best or do you disagree?

My favorite is LSL2. BUT, that said, if I was to recommend a LSL game to a new player, it would definitely be LSL3 for most folks, or LSL7 (because the graphics are so modern/cartoon/Disney-Quality).

I think it's the worst of the non-LSL5 games due to:
-heavy reliance on the manual.
-very linear, at one point the game won't process until you pick up the towel
-weight machines
-logs arcade sequence
The ending is nice and odd but if a person is not familiar with King's Quest or Police Quest, are they going to enjoy it equally? Due to it being heavy reliant on the manual, I wouldn't use it as a starting point for people with the parser, I'd go wth LSL1 where the parser is implemented better.

I agree with BBP. LSL1 is the simplest in the series. It's also hardly linear; you can do anything at any time, provided you have enough money to pay for a taxi.
LSL3 is great fun and all, but yes: the weight machines sequence feels tacked on, and the log arcade sequence is very frustrating.
I can't recall an overly heavy reliance on the manual? I know the maître d' won't let you into a show without it, but that's about it. (Also, if you don't have a manual, you have a pirated game!)

The ticket #s are in the manual (if I recall), also the "way" for the maze is carefully hidden in the manual.

The ticket numbers are what I mean by "the maître d" etc. (I can't recall his job - it's the guy Larry bribes to go and see a show, and after that, he demands a number).
I forgot about the way through the maze. IIRC, there is a poem? Or something? and you have to
take the first letter of every row (L, R, U or D), and then convert that to Left, Right, Up or Down. Not exactly hidden, but not obvious either. Pretty clever for 1989.

A lot of puzzles are hinted at in the manual only, such as:
Rosewood carving (to sell to Tawmi)
Weaving skirt (as disguise so Tawmi will talk to you)
Lei making (to give to Patti)
Opening the locker
Tickets to the show entry
Map through the maze
Basically, you can't make it through the Larry section without the manual.
Or, as Al Lowe put it on his website:
During the late floppy disk period, Sierra decided to put the copy protection in the complementary materials rather than on the disk. This way people could back up their games but without the documentation, you couldn't finish the games. Of course, the Internet pretty much negated that scheme! <grin>

Oh! OK. I did read the manual, but I didn't know about the
carving, skirt, or lei part. But it made sense at the time.
By the way, to paraphrase Collector:
Tawni, not Tawmi, unless Tawmis has decided to go around in drag.
