I had an old Dos copy and the newer 2006 collection copies of King's Quest 7 laying about. I had to install the 2 versions on my computer separately, combine the 2...installed the 1.4 to 2.00b dos patch, rewrote the DOSBox code that was supplied on this site, had to modify the resource.cfg file that came with the 2006 collector's edition, then create the KQ7.BAT file according to instructions on this site.


After doing all that...I dragged my the bat file to DOSBox hoping it would work. Lo and behold it did. I also somehow made a shortcut using the dosbox.conf file so i could just double click it...for some reason I can only get it to work inside the folder. Oh well....it works. I'm happy. and no, I didn't do the steam thing...although there seems to be a solution in a slightly different way. IDK if it works, but I know mine does.

Now if anyone could help me get King's Quest 8 working for Vista? I have it installed. When I double click on the app, it seems to start to load; it is in windowed mode by default, and there is nothing but a white screen. It then proceeds to crash. Can anyone help me? I'm running Windows Vista 64 bit Home Premium Edition.

You are making it far more complicated than needed. You just need to use the right installer for the version that you have and it will be setup automatically for you.

• If you have the 2006 collection, use the DOSBox patch.
• If you have the standalone 1.4, use the 1.4 to 2.00b installer.
• If you have the 1.54 version, use the 1.54 installer.
• If you have the 2.00b standalone, use the 2.00b installer.
• If you have the King's Quest Collector's Edition, use the King's Quest Collector's Edition installer.
• If you have the King's Quest Collection Series, use the King's Quest Collection Series installer.

I have not heard of anyone that has managed to get MoE going on Vista 64 nor have I given much time myself to exploring it.

i posted because i did all that on my vista and it wasn't enough for me.

I may have been using an older code...but when it was booting up with the sierre.exe code, it would come up with a .999 pal error code. I had to re-write that line, which wasn't in the code after i applied the patch. I had to modify it to include the KQ7.BAT line. The lines showing where the [edit] batch file [edit] was in the DOSBox file were not there, hence my explanation of it:

mount c "C:\Program Files (x86)\Sierra\King's Quest Collection(TM)\KQ7\"
c:
cd \
KQ7.BAT
exit

Before the 1.4 to 2.00b patch, and after the DOSBox patch, there was nothing. Also, when trying to apply the patch with the collector's 2006 only, it kept coming back as 0.chk file does not exist...and the sierra.exe file was not being created, I think due to 16-bit code stuff.

Anyways...it works for me now.
Still haven't got MoE to work [edit]for[edit] me.

If the upgrade didn't work it is probably because you installed in the %ProgramFiles% folder on Vista. This folder has limited write access. All legacy games should be installed in a user folder or a non-system folder on Vista.

I tried both ways. It works wherever I put the folder now.
