I am having MAJOR problems getting GK2 to play. I tried both the DOSBox installer and the XP installer. The game installs perfectly in both cases. Everything looks to be in order. But when I double click on either icon to play it does a version of the same thing; I get a brief black screen and then it drops to 1) the desktop or 2)DOSBox shell. No error message, no lockup, just the black screen and nothing.
I have the 6 disc version. Running on Windows XP: SP3 (32 bit). I tried using the original 6 discs, and also converting them to .iso files. I have played it on this computer before...but didn't use the installer or DOSBox. I used to have a page bookmarked that described how to get it to play, but that has been lost (something about copying the videos and setting up a .bat file, etc. etc.)
I have tried installing, reinstalling. Changed every setting I can think of. Including changing to 256 color 640x480 mode. I always get the same thing. Black screen-->nothing.
My System:
Dell Dimension 2400
Intel P4 2.53 GHZ
Windows XP SP3
Radeon HD2400Pro (256mb)
Please help!!!
GK2 - Frustration
Re: GK2 - Frustration
I need more information to figure out what problem you are having. If you are using my installer, edit the dosbox.conf file to remove the exit line in the [autoexec] section. This will keep DOSBox open so you can see what error you are getting. Post back here with this error. If no error at all, post the contents of your dosbox.conf.

Re: GK2 - Frustration
I tried removing the exit from autoexec, but it does the exact same thing. A brief black screen then back to the desktop. No error message that I could see.
I barely changed anything from the dosbox.conf file that was automatically generated.
[sdl]
fullscreen=true
autolock=false
[DOSBox]
machine = vga
captures = C:\Program Files\DOSBox\captures
[cpu]
core= normal
cycles= 10000
[autoexec]
# Lines in this section will be run at startup.
@ECHO OFF
mount c "C:\Sierra\GK2"
mount f "f:\" -t cdrom
c:
SIERRA

Re: GK2 - Frustration
That is from an older installer. Try downloading it again from this page.

Re: GK2 - Frustration
Well, using the new installer allowed me to spot the problem. UniSci.exe doesn't work on my system. It starts, shows the message "please wait...." and then doesn't do anything else. It NEVER combines the files. I waited for over an hour. I tried to take the files and join them manually with unisci.exe thinking it was the installer (and reading how to do it on another thread). But still no luck. So does unisci.exe have any known bugs, conflicts (SP3 perhaps?). OR does anyone know where I can download JUST those files (I legally own the game...but without those files, I can't play

Well. I got the game to run. For some reason my 1st CD was corrupt. Which is strange, it would let me read all the files off of it and install the game 100%. I downloaded an .iso of the first CD and all my problems were gone. Strange. Thanks anyway!!
