Collection patch problems...

I broke out my copies of the 2006 rereleases of the King's Quest, Police Quest, and Space Quest series because I really wanted to play them again. Remembering that there were some issues with KQ7 the last time I played through the game, I checked for patches to find a completely different patch than the one that was there a couple of years ago. Upon using the patch, suddenly I couldn't even load the games. DOSBox would just come up and go away. Then I read about the potential problems with installing these collections in the Program Files directory, so I uninstalled the game and then reinstalled into the Sierra\King's Quest Collection(TM) directory and tried again. This didn't work either, and I also noticed that the status box was repeatedly giving me a "file copy failed" error with every attempt the patch made. Looked around and I can't seem to find any answers. I'd really like to play through my games again - any suggestions?

It sounds like you downloaded one of the installers for the earlier collections. You want the DOSBox patch for the 2006 collection, not an installer. You have to install from the CD first, then you can apply the patch.

The installers on the page you linked seemed to work, except that I still got a "copy failed" error on whatever it is that the patch does prior to configuring KQ1.

I have a problem trying to tell myself that anything a patch does isn't important, so where down the line is this going to cause problems?

The failed copy is because you have selected KQ1AGI. This collection does not include the game, only the SCI remake. You must have the game before the patch can add it, it is not included with the patch. I included it in the patch so those that have game can add it into the collection. To add the game you need to copy the game's files to the same folder where you will run the patch. If the KQ1AGI option is selected it will copy the files to the right folder and set it up in DOSBox for you. You didn't supply the files, so the copy process failed.

Actually, the AGI version of KQ1 IS in the KQ1 folder (I have an earlier version of the collection). Maybe the wrong name of the folder? But then, why would the KQ1 AGI link be working?

If the KQ1AGI files were already in the target folder, the shortcut and config utility would work, but you would still get the "Copy Failed" error as the patcher is trying to copy files from its own folder.

Ok, I've managed to get almost everything from my 2006 collections of KQ, SQ, and PQ series running, using the AGI versions from earlier collections of each and messing with DOSBox settings. However, KQ8, even with the 2006 collection patch running (kind of makes sense, since I'm using the original install disc for that - but then why is the option even there since the 2006 collection doesn't include KQ8), just crashes instantly on start:

Any ideas?

P.S. While I've got your attention, I may as well ask. Is there anywhere out there to get a working copy of the Black Cauldron game? I've still got my Tandy 1000 booter disks, but how in the blue heck am I supposed to convert those to a Windows 7 32-bit system?

MoE does not run on Vista, but it was just to add an icon for MoE to the collection's group for those with XP. Only select that option if you have MoE installed.

I have the Black Cauldron for "IBM Tandy and MS-Dos compatibles". It's running on my Vista64 using Collector's DOSBox Installer. If yours is for Tandy only, I don't know what you can do.
