Let's Play Sierra Games - Deep Dive... Into EcoQuest 1. Get it? Deep dive? Because it's an ocean?
Channel update... and... Let's face it - if I start the video saying, "I am going to do a short video" - what that really means is - buckle up partner, we're going on a 26 minute journey together! I did not expect this to be 26 minutes! It's about what I am playing next (the thumbnail gives that away - so if that's all you want to know you can spare yourself the video) - but I also go on to share a few things I've collected/kept - from autographs, to maps, to receipts for Sierra games back in the day and talk about that stuff. So if you want to see and hear that - then, it's time for that 26 minute journey together!

I saw the sales receipt at 14:31. It is funny that the dollar amount for games actually hasn't changed all that much. Even now $59.95 is at the high end. The actually price of games has gone down, adjusting for inflation.
Interesting that you say "echo" instead of "ee-ko". I don't think either way is right or wrong. I've heard people say both "eecological" and "ekological". Personally, I've always said "ee-ko quest" and "echo quest" sounded odd to me.

According to a random site when I googled it - $44.99 in 1990 is worth $110.08 today.notbobsmith wrote: ↑Thu May 22, 2025 12:03 am I saw the sales receipt at 14:31. Also, I think you're absolutely right - I do believe it is "eco" as in "ecological"...
I think I have always pronounced it "Echo" Quest because "Ecco the Dolphin" - which Heaven help me, if that's also supposed to be pronounced "Ee-ko" the dolphin I have had that wrong since SEGA days!

I think in that case it is supposed to be "echo". Probably the reason for the double "C" and a reference to a dolphin's sonar. I vaguely remember ads for it on tv, too.Tawmis wrote: ↑Thu May 22, 2025 12:44 amAccording to a random site when I googled it - $44.99 in 1990 is worth $110.08 today.notbobsmith wrote: ↑Thu May 22, 2025 12:03 am I saw the sales receipt at 14:31. No, I am pretty sure you're right for EcoQuest, it's no doubt "ee-ko" pronunciation. I just never even thought of that, having played Ecco the Dolphin and the game having a dolphin side kick. My brain went to "Echo" rather than "Eco"notbobsmith wrote: ↑Fri May 23, 2025 12:20 amI think in that case it is supposed to be "echo". Re: Let's Play Sierra Games - Deep Dive... Into EcoQuest 1. Get it? Deep dive? Because it's an ocean?
So I beat EcoQuest 1... it's relatively easy (and I see why, made to be played with kid and family, for sure).
There was just a few parts I struggled with. But relatively the puzzles were kept simple. (The flashlight was the one that I swam around a bit... and... finding the key... that was on accident... because I thought that looked like skull teeth area originally... more when I talk about that in the commentary lol)
And I think I found ONE dead end?
The barrels in the cave... if you leave before setting up the transponder... I don't think you can go back into the cave? Which dead ends you, it seems, because Adam doesn't have the suit in inventory and when I tried to swim back into it - it wouldn't let me. Thankfully I had a restore right there. But that was rough because I figured out the transponder after leaving the cave, and realized it needed to be attached to the barrel not to the cave outside.
Anyway - Video is rendering now. Will upload it to the youtubes soon!
I will say... it's a dern charming game! I actually REALLY liked it. No idea why I never finished this before. I think I remember getting to the fish city and that was it (which is pretty much near the start) when I first got the game... and don't think I ever looked at it again. Really glad I decided to do this channel so I could rediscover games like this.

Yup! (Well after I do commentary of EcoQuest 1) - but yes, definitely EcoQuest 2.
It's another one, that I don't think I ever played far into and certainly never finished. I am hoping it's as charming as EcoQuest 1. Because that was a pleasant surprise.

The playthrough, though 3 hours in total, over a few days, did not feel long at all.

It is a nice, casual game. Like you said: charming.Tawmis wrote: ↑Sun May 25, 2025 2:53 am So I beat EcoQuest 1... it's relatively easy (and I see why, made to be played with kid and family, for sure).

I don't recall that particular potential dead end. It would be a little surprising since they do make the game fairly easy and you can't actually die.
So this isn't the CD talkie version?

It really is!
I googled it - and the Wikis says there is no dead end. But... I am going to argue that. Unless there's some specific way after you swim out - he talks about taking off the suit because it's too hot - it is not in his inventory to be able to put back on.notbobsmith wrote: ↑Mon May 26, 2025 12:27 am I don't recall that particular potential dead end. UNLESS - now I need to check - if he "puts it back in the box" where you got it - which would be odd, because it doesn't say he does and makes no action in doing so?
I only had the floppy disk version of the game.
So... there's a talkie one?
I kind of prefer text adventure (talkie is fine), but talking to it later, is much easier in the text version because I often speed up the video (so for example I am not talking for the whole 3 hours of Eco1, it will probably be an hour) - and to talk to it, I lower the volume down all the way so the music (and talking if there is any), isn't playing in my ear as I am trying to talk.

Yeah. Early '90s voice acting at its finest. Adam (Dylan Skirvin) must have been played by the son of the director (William Skirvin). To be fair, he did an okay job.Tawmis wrote: ↑Mon May 26, 2025 1:53 pmAh, very cool. I checked on youtube after the above and found a talkie. I think I like the text version.![]()
