Haiku Knight
It's a very slow day in St George's Books, quite some time before the Voodoo Murders. Gabriel and Grace are lounging around, bored out of their minds, when Gabe picks up his pen and passes Grace a note...
Let's play poetry-slam!
I'll write a poem, and-- um--
How d'you spell "hi-coup"?
Grace rolls her eyes and replies...
That's HAIKU, you dolt!
You can write one if you want;
I'm selling books here!
Back from Gabe...
Yeah, haiku! That's neat!
What are the rules for writing
one o' them thingies?
You go, Grace!
First, five syllables;
Second line's seven of them;
Third's five again.
Gabe scratches his head and writes...
That sounds real hard, Grace.
Let me give it a shot right here--
Hey, I did it! Woo-hoo!
Grace rolls her eyes again and replies...
Way to go, Einstein.
I'm fixing your accounts here,
So give me some peace!
Gabe thinks and thinks, then writes...
Give me a break, Grace.
I'm new at this haiku thing;
Just one more go, please?
Grace scrunches up Gabe's haiku, drops it in the bin, and writes...
You know - for a writer,
you have no poetry skills.
Stick to trashy horror!
Gabe triumphantly writes back...
HA! I win! I WIN!
Your last line's six syllables,
not five! In your face!
Grace contemptuously kicks Gabe's haiku out the door and replies...
Stop it, silly man!
I quit until you pay me or
stop writing drivel!
Gabe penitently writes back...
Sorry Grace.
Grace writes back, even more triumphantly...
HA! Now *I* win, 'cause
that wasn't haiku! Hee-hee -
Gotcha, Gabriel!
The End
