Someone apparently has a full working version, or was it just thrown in the garbage bin.

There was an EGA version the Sierra released for those without the hardware to support VGA.

SQ4, KQ5, LSL1Remake, SQ1Remake, LSL5, Conquests of Longbow, Mixed up Fairy Tales, Castle of Dr Brain, Hoyle 3, Jones in the Fast Lane, Heart of China, Willy Beamish, and Rise of the Dragon also exist in EGA versions. There was a form in the box to send away the 256 colour version floppies and get mailed back 16-colour version floppies. There are even screenshots on the back of (most of?) each box showing EGA graphics.

Indeed. I actually have a King's Quest V EGA.

There were also a few games of the era that included both VGA and EGA drivers.

That said, I kind of wish I'd gotten both versions, back in the day, just for completionists sake.

Easier to find the VGA variant.

I saw SQ1 Remake EGA on ebay recently. But I chose the VGA version instead. The box was in better condition.
