We'll see. I am not a fan of 10. Too much control has been taken away from the user. I hate, hate , hate how every update changes my associations. Oh well, I won't be getting a new PC that can handle it anytime soon. The waterline to my house broke and I had to drop over $5,000 to replace it. I'm not much inclined to be spending on any big ticket items for the foreseeable future.

There are a few things I like about 10, especially in regards to recording screen activity, but I hate most elements. For one thing, I seldom get to use it because it’s always installing updates, which cannot be shut off, only paused. And with every update, it gets slower and slower and slower. It was lightning fast when I got it, now it takes forever to boot up.

This is why I still use Windows 7. ;) Not only does it allow backward compatibility to many DOS games (as well as DOSBox), it also allows me to configure the start menu to the look and feel that I want (i.e. the 2000/XP look-and-feel).

I know Windows 7 is more vulnerable to exploits etc., but I haven't seen any so far...

Windows has not had DOS since Me. There is not even NTVDM (the really crappy builtin DOS emulator) since Windows went 64 bit. DOSBox still works great on Win10. You can easily install Classic Shell to get earlier styles of the start menu. You can still set the taskbar to behave like 2k/XP.

By the time that you get bit by vulnerabilities it is already too late. I am a little surprised that you are taking such a cavalier about vulnerabilities given how you freakout over every little false positive your overactive AV throws at you over this site. You have been told over and over about the false positives are because of the stubs in the NSIS installers. If the installers were signed this would never happen, even with no other changes, but I can't afford to do so, especially for something that I am offering for free.

There are more reasons than just security to move on from an outdated/unsupported OS such as changing APIs, meaning that you will find things that won't work right, if at all on older OSs because of the changed APIs or missing features of old Windows. That is if it installs at all. Problems with backwards compatibility usually have workarounds. I can even do things like run Win16 programs as if they were native programs on my x64 Win10 pro without emulators with WineVDM and other tools.

Is Win10 perfect? Hell no! But Moving backwards or staying with the old is not a viable solution.

Not gonna lie that was pretty cool. Even if she looks like she was reading from a script the whole time (I know that was probably her actual experience, but man these presenters can sometimes seem totally ungenuine).

As for 10, I tolerate it. I'm annoyed with how it keeps adding new things I don't need. But I just need to disable them and I'm fine. I've beaten it into submission/negotiated an mutual understanding with it for the most part by this point. I'm just surprised they're rolling out a new Windows at all seeing as they made such a big deal about Windows 10 being the LAST version of Windows that would just be perpetually updated.

Yeah, not to mention no Windows prior to Win10 can take advantage of DX12 or higher. And I play new games, so. Need it.

And you won't. These things are designed to fly under the radar.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune, Collector...

I'd love to hear the King's QUest shoutout but my Win7 laptop has gotten a bit too old to load that before dinner's ready :D

I work with Win 10 daily now - and it surprises me how excellent software like the calculator (which I use a lot) and MS Office has gone downhill in both looks and interface. Today I got surprised by something called "Widget menu" when I booted up and I spent ten minutes in time I need to use to start up looking for viruses.
Whether Vista, Win 7 or Win 10 the programme I use most is NotePad. :D How something so simple can be so good.

Nice to see a Sierra Game to get a shout out.

Did they guy that came before her seem like a CGI character to anyone else?

I currently have a Windows 7 Desktop I use (which I freely admit, is my primary system) - I pray to keep it safe by using ESET and keeping that up to date. (But I am sure there will come a time that even ESET won't support Windows 7).

I also have a Windows 8.1 laptop and a Windows 10 laptop. Windows 8.1 can be used for gaming (it's meaty, for what it is), but the Windows 10 laptop is one from work when we were using the Snapdragon chip - so it's very, very, limited. Mostly work type stuff (good for Office applications, but anything else is either too taxing or can't functionally run on it).

For work, it's Windows 10 all the time.

Like Collector, not a fan of where Windows is headed - everything is subscription now - and with all the bills already - between water, electricity, rent/mortgage, gas, now Windows, Office, cable, phone, etc. - it's gotten ridiculous.

Still have Windows 7 as well and there's no reason to even look at Windows 10 considering MS is dropping support in 2025. That's a mere four years away and Windows 11 will be out long before then.

As for gaming, a lot of devs write that Windows 10 is required, but it isn't. They put down what they've tested the game on, but most games still use DX11 and are very compatible with Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1. Only a few games actually use DX12 right now and while I'm sure that'll increase as time goes on, I imagine Maia and I will be using Windows 11 by then so it's not a concern.

Hold on, hold on ... Windows is by subscription now? Sorry, what does that mean? I'm confused. :?

Windows isn't yet, but Office 365 (latest version of Word, Excel, etc) - has a subscription, as does Adobe Professional.
You no longer pay just one large price.
You make annual payments.
For for personal, it's 69 a year for Office 365 - https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microso ... 5-products

I am just waiting for Windows (or any OS) to eventually become subscription.

Well, that sucks. :( Why would I want to make annual payments on Office? In the end, it just works out to spending even more money on the darn thing. (Darn? Did I say "darn"? Well, gosh-darn it all to heck). :P

No surprise that I haven't heard about this. I've been using LibreOffice for years, and it does exactly what Office does and works just fine. :)

Wouldn't it be good if Microsoft could/would offer two options? I mean, suppose that Office costs $600 (or whatever). So, if you can afford to pay $600, then it's yours right now (huzzah!) ;) And if you can't, then Microsoft can work out a payment plan (e.g. pay $50/month, or $100/month) until the full $600 is paid off! :)

That way, people who can't afford to pay everything up-front can still use Office, and Microsoft gets good PR because they can say "We look after 'the little guy!' No matter who you are, you can still afford to use Office!" etc., etc. ;) Wouldn't that make sense?

I think the idea is everything will go subscription base. Like I said, I am just waiting for Windows to go Subscription base.

But the idea is - if you want Office, you just make some monthly payments!

And yes, it costs more in the long run with payments.

Which is a good business plan.

Microsoft is a business.

So it's doing what's best for it. :)

Yeah, well. By doing that, Micro-Sloth is coming across as greedy, money-grubbing slugs. :x

If Windows goes Subscription-base, I'll either go to Linux or try to find another open-source operating system. I don't like paying anyone more than I have to. I doubt I'm the only one.
