B.C. Quest.

Post by Tawmis »

So the recent discussion made me dig out the "game" and scan it and take photos of the mug and such...

If you're really, really, really bored and want to head towards a very photo intensive blog... check out:

Ugh, for goodness sake. :x I replied to this last night, but it looks like the board deleted my reply! :(

If I remember rightly what I said, it went something like this:

So, I'm not really, really, really bored. ;) Instead, I'm really bold (like Duh Ugg! :D), and read through the whole thing. :)

Kudos to you and Shawn for creating a storyboard and even a manual at such a young age. Those photos were clearly taken in the late 80s - those haircuts are the most late-80s thing that ever late-80s-ed. ;)

I can also see where you got the talent for the later D&D cartoons and your "Colouring In Kazaa!" thread. :D

Do you think you might go back to B.C. Quest some day?

Yeah you can tell my silly art style was very, very, very influenced by Farside. :)

As for getting to BC Quest one day, if I knew an ounce of coding for AGI/SCI, I'd probably make an attempt at making the game. Though I can't get to the notes (I think they're on the 5.25" disk) - but a lot of it is (remarkably) still in my head. Re-reading what we wrote for the manual and the "survival guide" reminded me a lot of what we'd planned. I've always enjoyed being creative... I blame my 4th grade teacher reading "The Hobbit" to the class... it was like a dam that burst wide open and the river of creativity doesn't stop flowing. It's why I did NeN, for example. It was just another way to tell a story. It's why I DM... six or seven games these days.

But yeah, if I knew how to program in AGI/SCI and at least create the game I'd always wanted, I totally would do it.

This is very cool. I never had the creativity to come up with something like this.

Sigh. I probably had the creativity to learn music at a young age (I learned a little bit about playing the pipe organ at a young age), but like many kids my age -- maybe 7 or 8? -- I preferred playing ball games outside to being cooped up inside, learning boring scales. Too bad. :(

I also had the opportunity to learn karate at the same age, but again, when you're 8, who wants to listen to boring old adults and get flipped upside down on a mat, when you can go outside and bounce a ball? *shrug* But I guess energy and impatience is what being 8 is all about. ;)

Having said that, when it comes to writing stories, I only had the confidence to start writing when I was about 18 -- funnily enough, a few years after I started to play Sierra games. (I know 18 is kinda late for Sierra games, but seeing as English is my second language, I didn't think I was any good at it before about 17-18). Sound familiar? :)

I blame my 4th grade teacher. Or thank, actually.
Literally changed my life with "The Hobbit."

I had no idea English was your second language!
I know there's several languages spoke in Australia, but I know English is a very common one.
Considering your writing and spelling on here, I just always assumed English was your primary because you're so good at it.

Heh. Thank you! :) I wasn't born in Australia, but when my family came here, I was about 13 or so, very shy, and knew only very basic English. So, because of my shyness and lack of English, I was bullied (both physically and mentally) throughout high school. :( Thank goodness there was no such thing as social media back then. But I worked very hard to learn English and assert myself better.

Over the years, as I read more and more books in English (and learned more phrases in other languages), my command of the language obviously grew. But I never overcame my shyness around strangers, and only got more confidence when I started performing music.

I'll admit, I'm still not super-comfortable in loud and unfamiliar settings, especially with lots of people talking at once. But I keep trying. :)

So while working on my commentary on Freddy Pharkus... I got inspired to talk about this (B.C. Quest) and my dreams of working at Sierra...

And... I forgot to add something - so made a second (honest to God!) short video. I don't even talk in it.

I am usually not a fan of the book of faces, but sometimes, it has some pleasantly surprising results... such as this! Totally made my day!

That's a pretty thorough design document. And a caveman game would have fit right in at Sierra. It could be almost a companion to Space Quest. Like The Jetsons and The Flintstones.

Yeah, I went all in as we designed this. I (back then) truly thought, "Sierra is definitely going to hire us!"

I wish I had access to a USB 5.25" - because there's that 5.25" drive and I think it has the documentation on there of the puzzles and such we'd created for the game and the .BAS to .EXE little text adventure demo of the initial area. If it's not on there, then that stuff is lost, and I have no idea what (if anything?) is on that 5.25" disk. :D

In a way, you can see, we tried to emulate the Two Guys From Andromeda (in costume, silly photos).
