GOG Dreamlist

GOG just added a new feature called Dreamlist. It's a list of games that people can vote on to encourage GOG to try to get the rights to. I think they had something like this informally in their forums. But they seemed to have put a decent amount of work into this. They include box art and screenshots of games they don't even have. Anyway, you can vote for your favorites. I voted for the Manhunter games.

I voted for the LOTR games from the mid-2000s (i.e. LOTR: Battle for Middle Earth, etc.) and the Discworld games from the mid-to-late-90s and early-2000s.

Could it be possible? *wonders* Could games as old as that "arise from the dead", so to speak? ;)

How is this different than GOG's WISHLIST?

As I understand it, the "wishlist" is simply a thread on GOG's forums. GOG doesn't have to act on it. The "dreamlist" goes higher, I guess?

I think it's more just an expansion of the wishlist. Like I said, box art and screenshots are posted. People can post stories about the game. It probably won't make it more likely that GOG will act on it, but if the barrier to get the game is low and they can be made to run easily on modern systems (DOS games are easy with DOSBox)... who knows?

Weird. Thought that was sorta the point of the Wishlist. People could put what they want and folks can vote - to see what gog might look to getting. :D I will checking out this Dreamlist thing.

Meh, so it's just like Wishlist. There's no checking to see if a game is already posted. Did a search for "Wizardry" and see SEVERAL entries for the same Wizardry game in the Dreamlist. Wish there was a way - if you submit - it searches and says "That game has already been submitted. Vote for it here."

Otherwise it will just be as cluttered as the wishlist. Which suffers the same duplicate entries.

Well, that answers that question.

For a nano-second, I was surprised that Tawm didn't "like" my comment, until I remembered that this forum isn't FarceBroke. Or ForceBork. (I'll see myself out).

But seriously ... the games above can be run under DOSBox, but for some of them, it requires some monkeying about with one or two of the *.sys files (which I managed to do myself, since I still have the CDs -- it wasn't hard). :) If even I -- who don't know much about getting Win9x games, that require a FAT32 file system, to run under Win2K and above -- but if even I can get the job done, should (or would) the techs at GOG have any problems? :)

The licenses might be a problem, of course. The LOTR games were originally created by EA, but they aren't selling these games under their platform, so to hell with 'em. *irritated* :x

The Discworld games were created by Teeny Weeny Games (later Perfect Entertainment, now defunct) and released by Psygnosis (now under the Sony umbrella). The third Discworld game was finished and released GT Interactive (now under the Atari umbrella). But neither Sony nor Atari have done anything with either Psygnosis or GT Interactive for at least 25 years. Surely that's enough to be going on with? *grumble*

Hmm ... so you think GOG is just gone to Pot(ter)? :)

Seriously, I'm not surprised. This "Dreamlist" thing looks to me like a place where people can reminisce about a game and/or vent their feelings. If anything comes out of this, I'd be mightily -- and pleasantly -- surprised.

I see what you mean. It seems that the problem is someone creating a new game with a slightly different title. "Wizardry 6: Bane of the Cosmic Forge", which is already available on GOG, versus "Wizardry: Bane of the Cosmic Forge". Without someone curating the titles, I guess stuff like this will happen. Although some of the duplicates seem to be the Japanese version. Maybe it could be cross-referenced with MobyGames, Submit the link to MobyGames, and then the Dreamlist checks if it exists already.

Yeah, the Japanese games are actually different. After Wizardry 8 (Sir-Tech, company who made and owned, officially went under... they were technically already "a dead" company during Wizardry 8 - but a handful of them put their own money into finishing Wizardry 8). Shortly after, a Japanese company bought the rights, and changed it into an anime RPG... hey even made a Wizardry anime MMO, which did not last long.... because... why... anyway, I digress. T But there's about five (or maybe 6?) Japanese Wizardry games.

Another company recently got the rights to "remake" the first Wizardry (which is on GoG and I got there), which was fun (and so insanely brutal, like the original Wizardry).

But yes, if you search for Wizardry - you will find, as you said, "Wizardry II: The Knight of Diamonds", "Wizardry The Knight of Diamonds", "Wizardry II The Knight of Diamonds", "Wizardry 2: The Knight of Diamonds" and so on.

I wish someone on GoG was moderating these - or that there was a way we could link to duplicates and ask for them to be "merged" to keep it tidy.

Hmm. Did anything come out of this GOG Dreamlist, in the end? Does anyone know?

It's only been around for a few days. Even if they try acting on some of the suggestions now, it will probably be months before anything comes to fruition.

Oh, Whoops! Sorry, I didn't mean it like that. *blush* I didn't mean it in the "WHERE'S MY GAME!!!" <insert angry face> way. Of course it's far too early for GOG to actually acquire any of these IPs, much less offer them for sale.

All I meant was this: I received an email saying something like "Thank you for voting, your reviews are helpful", which is nice. I was only wondering if GOG said anything else to anyone, that's all. :)

I got pretty much the same email.
