And here's the Star Wars 5e one shot I ran a year ago...

Happy Star Wars Day. I must admit, at first I thought that May 4th was the premiere date of the original movies. It wasn't until I heard "May the 4th" out loud that I got it.

We call it Remembrance of the Dead here, so I'l think we stick with Father's Day (vader being Dutch for father) to celebrate star wars.

Oh no. I heard about May the 4th years ago. I'm not sure how long ago. (When did it become a "thing" anyway?) I only meant that when I first heard about it, it took me a while to make the connection with "Star Wars Day" and "May (the) 4th".

Am I right in thinking the word "Vader" for "father" is a common feature for countries that (partly or fully) speak German or languages with Germanic roots, BBP? *curious* I'm thinking of The Netherlands, Belgium, and England. (And Germany too, of course!)

Just wondering. I recently just finished reading the story of Charlemagne's empire (from its start to its final collapse), so I wonder whether German is still spoken in parts of France. (Understood, very probably. Spoken ... maybe).

That's an interesting question (i.e. when did it become a "thing"?) Let me look it up.

First of all: for some fans, the official Star Wars Day comes on May 25, the date of the first film's release. The Los Angeles City Council even declared the date to be Star Wars Day in 2007, although the California Legislature voted in 2019 to designate May 4 as Star Wars Day.

As for May 4th: wikipedia states that the first recorded mention of the phrase goes back to May 3 1979 (the day of the UK General Election), when Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. To express their support, her political party purchased a half-page advertisement in of the London Evening News reading "Dear Maggie, May the Fourth Be with You. Your Party Workers."

The phrase came and went over the years (appearing on Count Duckula (1988), in the UK Parliament (1994), in a book on Star Wars (2004) and on Facebook in 2008), before the first official Star Wars Day was celebrated in Toronto in 2011. It was re-celebrated in 2012, and became an institution after that.

I have heard of people celebrating May the 4th by having a hidden recording of the Imperial March Theme ... and playing it when someone they dislike walks into the room. (Seems a bit mean-spirited, but if that person has been mean to them in the past, I can sort-of understand it).

2011 sounds about right. I first heard about a while ago, but it doesn't seem like it was around all that long.

Is it a bad thing that I remember the introduction to this (and the beginning/ending song) almost word for word, despite not having seen Count Ducukla since almost forever? (And yes, I remember Thames Television. I am ancient).
