Have you played them? Yes, I've heard the phrases "You have died of dysentery" and "You have died of snakebite", so I assume these games are pretty unforgiving. Is that right?

Not surprising that the game would get turned into something. I first played the game in school, believe it or not. And... every nightmare you've heard about the game, is absolutely true. It's horrible when you name the people on the voyage after yourself and family/friends, and along the trail (usually pretty early on), one or two of them almost always die. I only played Oregon Trail once - and won. But one of my party of 5 didn't make it. It's unforgiving in the sense that, one of the first things you do, is decide when you leave the east, and if you pick the wrong time you've already lost.
