True. I just used it today, had to wait one day for the water to slowly drain or heat away.

The baby crying crib scene is so deeply engrained in my memory. Because I'd been playing it with my wife and friends when it triggered and we all screamed.

I don't enjoy being scared, so I never played Phantas or Shivers (or Lighthouse). Did I miss much?

I'd say they're worth playing. I missed these when they first came out and I'm not really a fan of horror either. I first played them as part of my "Choose My Next Adventure" series. They're interesting to play as a time capsule of a particular era of PC gaming. I didn't have any nostalgia to fall back on and I tried to keep an open mind versus "FMV games sucked!" and I kind of enjoyed them.

I am not a horror fan and in the end enjoyed both Shivers and Phantas. The sequel of Phantas ehhh no, Shivers II I did enjoy but it has some issues.

None of them have a wow story, but in Shiv 1 and Phant 1 they do the job. In Phantas you don't even have to watch the main bit of horror (the murder scenes) to advance the game, plus Phantas has a self censor.
There is a chase at the end which is a lot of fun to play around in, but if like me you're too scaredy initially, you can bypass that by getting all items you need before stepping into the obvious bait room.


In Shiv 1 there are a few dead-some-time people but the main scare bit is the Ixupi, the evil spirits that haunt the museum and caused the deaths, and your goal is to capture them and solve puzzles along the way. One of the main criticisms of the game is how cartoony the Ixupi looked. It's just that they jump out, but except for one you must see (and boy will you know when that one hits ya) they can be easily avoided. The environment in both Shivers and Shivers II has rich colouring that I found takes away from the scare factor as well.

So, shiv 1 phant 1? Recommend. If you like those I can recommend Shiv 2 (which does have the best game concept I believe) . Phant 2 is worth it for the camp value and for Trevor Barnes <3.
