Red Baron

Post by DeadPoolX »

Collector, I was wondering if you'd like a "strategy and tactics" writeup for Red Baron. I realize that game isn't an adventure, but it is part of the Sierra family. If there's one game I really know, it's that one. ;)

sure, I can link to it from the main Red Baron help page. The page is not very complete, but I needed to get something up for GOG. I've also had it in mind to do an installer for it for a while.

Fantastic! :D

What format is good for you? I can easily do MS Word or PDF.

I have the CD collection that contains both Red Baron and A-10 Tank Killer. Would that be of any use to you?

Plain text would be best, unless there is some formatting that you want to preserve. If so a DOC.

Thanks, but I already have it.

DPX, here is a preliminary installer for the RB/A-10 CD. I intend to add support for the floppy version. I don't have a joystick, anymore. Could you try it out and let me know how well it works with a joystick? I know that sometimes there can be joystick problems with DOSBox. I want to get the DOSBox settings right before I go through the trouble to adding floppy support.

Unfortunately, I don't have a flight stick as well. New flight simulators are so rare nowadays that I didn't think I'd need one. In fact, I doubt very many people still have one today.

If I get a new flight stick in the future (which I might do), I'll definitely give it a shot.

Sorry for the bump, but I've just read about Red Baron that the 16-colour version had been released as freeware in 1997. Does this still hold today, or was it a limited-time promotion action, like it was with Betrayal at Krondor which is mentioned in the footnote in the same Wikipedia article? There's an old school flight sim website that still has the full 16-colour version of Red Baron up for download:

There were a few Sierra games that were released for a limited time free, such as Caesar. These were usually promotional temporary releases coordinated with the release of newer versions. Mystery House is the only one that I know of that was truly freewared. In fact., it was released to public domain. That page looks to be an ancient page that was never updated. I am pretty sure that that was for a limited time. They probably never had the rights to distribute it on the Wings Of Honor server.

Ah well, I suspected that. Anyway, here's a non-playable demo of the game if you're interested (but I'm sure you know about it already ;)):
