Return to Krondor

Not far into the game as yet but have collected Jazhara and we are now exploring in order to gain experience etc before going to the palace.

And we need help

(1) Our powers to assess items appear to be abysmal and we have loads of "assess failed" items in our inventories - items which we have both attempted to assess and have both failed.
So .... apart from the potions .... with which we can take risks .... should we just go ahead and sell these failures ?

(2) How can a character get to toss fire oil or similar during combat ?

(3) How can Jazhara get to use her magic during combat .... or at any other time, come to that ?

I've perused the manual but can't find instructions for either

I haven't played the game, but perhaps someone here has. Also, the GOG Krondor forum has active players if you need a hint.

I've messed about and worked out how to do most things now. Just a couple I still haven't yet mastered. So I'll go ask
